The steering group of REMAIN

Ellenor Mittendorfer-Rutz is the principle investigator of REMAIN. Further, she is Professor in Insurance Medicine at Karolinska Institutet. Moreover, she is the Head of the Division of Insurance Medicine and research group leader of the research group MENTE (Mental health and social integration). Her research responds to the inherent complexity of the research area of insurance medicine by conducting interdisciplinary and translational research i.e. spanning from etiologic, prognostic to intervention and treatment research. The focus is on sickness absence and disability pension, due to specific disorders, primarily mental disorders. Additional disorders of interest - often comorbid with mental disorders - include cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases. Moreover, her research approach offers a transnational value not only due to extensive collaboration with international colleagues but also by comparing research results in Sweden with those in other countries. Due to the rising number of immigrants in Sweden and other European countries, her research includes also studies regarding sickness absence/disability pension in this often vulnerable group. She is also the principle investigator of several studies focussing on mental ill-health and social integration among refugees. Studies build mainly on nationwide register data and apply advanced statistical models, including models within pharmacoepidemiology.

Allan Krasnik is Professor of Health Services Research at the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen. His scientific main interest is health services research with special attention to prevention, evaluation of innovations and reforms and equity of health and health care with a special focus on immigrants and ethnic minorities. His ongoing research focuses on studies on the determinants of health of migrants and ethnic minorities, their access to health services and the improvement of migrant and ethnic minority care. He has been the head of the Danish Research Centre for Migration, Ethnicity and Health and has lead a research program about society, culture and health policy at the Center for Healthy Ageing (CEHA) at the University of Copenhagen. He is now leading a large Nordic project, CAGE, on health and welfare of refugee children and adolescents. Until recently he was the President of the Section of Migrant and Ethnic Minority Health at the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and is now a member of its Steering Committee.

Marie Louise Nørredam is Professor at the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen. Her scientific main interest lies within the field of equity and health; migration and health and health services research. A particular focus is on the impact of ethnicity and migration on health conditions and access to health care; vulnerable migrant groups; mental health and chronic diseases among migrants. Marie Nørredam is involved in a number of research projects within the area equity and health and migration and health. She is the course director for several courses at bachelor, master and doctoral student levels.

Peter Klimek is Associate Professor at the Section for Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna and Faculty member of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna. His research focus is to explore and exploit the possiblities that Big Data and complexity science offer for the future of medicine. His work uses methods from network analysis, statistical mechanics, complex data analysis, and various simulation and modelling approaches to understand how we can improve, both, patient health and the health care system itself. His results include novel methods to quantify and predict the future health state of multi-morbid patients, statistical models for the influence of epigenetic factors on disease risks, as well as network characterizations of health care processes. His research interests also include complexity economics and socio-economic modelling. He developed a statistical test for electoral fraud, novel methods to measure systemic risk, as well as modelling techniques for emerging risks and for socio-economic impact analyses of new technologies. Peter obtained his PhD in theoretical physics in 2010 and his venia docendi in 2018 in computational science.

Marit Sijbrandij is Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Psychology at the VU University Amsterdam. Her research evolves around the prevention and treatment of mental disorders following trauma and adversities in a global context. She has performed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the field of prevention and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other common mental disorders resulting from the experience of extremely negative events, both in the Netherlands as well as in low- and middle income countries. She is also interested in the etiology of mental health problems following trauma and adversities, and psychological and biological mechanisms involved in the effect of evidence-based treatments. Finally, her aim with her research is to contribute to the development of effective psychological interventions for both common mental disorders as well as more severe mental disorders, that are scalable in settings across the globe. She is a lecturer and the chair of the Exam Committee of Psychology of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam. She is also the treasurer of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) based in Chicago, USA.

Lisa Berg is a researcher at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Stockholm University. She has a background in public health sciences, epidemiology and sociology and obtained her PhD from Karolinska Institutet. Her research interests include health, education and social adjustment across the life course for children and youth in vulnerable life situations; migration and health; health inequalities and social determinants of health.
