Lactate and Sepsis

Aim

To quantify production and consumption of lactate in ICU treated patients with sepsis and septic shock.

Description

Increased concentration of lactate in plasma is associated with poor prognosis in patients with septic shock. Therefore lactate measurements are often relied upon in screening for sepsis as well as used to guide fluid resuscitation. However, the actual metabolism of lactate in septic patients is sparsely studied. By giving a bolus dose of 13C-labeled lactate and subsequent plasma sampling we aim to quantify rate of appearance (production) and rate of disappearance (consumption) of lactate in septic patients with elevated and normal lactate concentrations.

Main results and publications

We have in a previous study validated the method in healthy volunteers as well as in a group of mixed ICU patients. Results are currently submitted for publication.
