Aim

To improve fluid treatment during major abdominal surgery, with special focus on the use of albumin as intravenous resuscitation fluid.

Description

We measure the synthesis rate of albumin and fibrinogen in healthy volunteers and selected patient groups by stable isotope tracers. The leakage of albumin from the blood stream can be measured by radio iodinated albumin, or by comparing the dilution av albumin with the dilution of hemoglobin during surgery. We also look at markers of inflammation and small vessel injury, to gain knowledge on the mechanisms that promote capillary leakage. We investigate the imbalance between syntheses of different liver proteins after major liver resections.

Main results and publications

Several studies of albumin and fibrinogen turnover in different patient groups have been performed and published in recent years. Ongoing studies focus on major abdominal surgery such as liver or pancreatic surgery.
