KIPRIME Medical Education Research Grant

What is medical education research? 

Medical education is an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that is based on perspectives from both health care sciences and behavioural sciences, particularly pedagogy but also psychology, sociology and social anthropology. Within the field of medical education, learning processes, conditions for learning and professional development within health care are investigated. Research within medical education covers individual and system levels, both within academia and health care. The concept include studies on education in all health care professions. Research questions concerning both formal education and learning at the workplace are studied. 

Aim of the grant

The KIPRIME Research Grant aims to establish a foundation at KI for internationally strong research in the field, thereby strengthening education and lifelong learning in healthcare and the life sciences sector. Ultimately, education in healthcare and the life sciences sector, based on scientific research in medical education, will lead to higher quality education, increased patient safety 

This call 

  • aims to nourish medical education research at KI by offering a funding opportunity for midcareer medical education researchers.
  • the awardees in this call are expected to build or lead strong scientific programs in the field of medical education and contribute to the development of the field at KI through networking, mentoring and collaboration as part of the greater strategic initiative.
  • the total funding for this call is 1,5 million SEK/year for three years.
  • the funding will be split between 2-4 applicants. 

Applications will be reviewed by an international expert panel, hence the application need to be written in English.  

Decision on funding will be made by KI President during spring 2026. Awarded projects will receive funding to commence in summer 2026. Funding can be awarded for a maximum of three years and will be paid out to the department where the researcher is active. An approved half-time report is required to receive continued funding. A project report is to be submitted once the project is finished and the project findings are to be presented at KI and elsewhere.  

Eligibility criteria 

  1. The applicant holds a PhD but is not yet a full professor
  2. The applicant is employed at KI, or is formally affiliated with a KI department, and holds an employment in a Stockholm based healthcare organisation. The applicant may not be primarily employed at another university.
  3. The applicant has previous experience of conducting research in the field of medical education and has published minimum three scientific articles in the field and is first or last author on minimum 2 of these.
  4. The applicant conducts their medical education research primarily at KI (and not at another university).
  5. The applicant commits to taking an active role in the medical education research network at KI for the duration of the project.

  • Budget and Justification (Minimum 80% of budget should be for research salaries (including INDI and LKP)

This initiative is made possible through the strategic commitment of President at KI, together with The Gunnar Höglund and Anna-Stina Malmborg Foundation. The foundation has since several years co-funded Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education (KIPRIME) as well as the KIPRIME Fellows.
