What is medical education research? 

Medical education is an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that is based on perspectives from both healthcare sciences and behavioral sciences, particularly pedagogy but also psychology, sociology and social anthropology. Within the field of medical education, learning processes, conditions for learning and professional development within healthcare are investigated. Research within medical education covers individual and system levels, both within academia and healthcare. The concept includes studies on education in all healthcare professions. Research questions concerning both formal education and learning at the workplace are studied. 

The grant

The KIPRIME Research Grant aims to strengthen the foundation for internationally leading research in medical education at Karolinska Institutet. The overall goal is to improve education and lifelong learning in healthcare and the life sciences, ultimately contributing to higher quality education and healthcare.

The aim of the grant   

  • To support and advance medical education research at KI by providing funding opportunities for mid-career researchers in the field.
  • To further develop and establish robust scientific programs in medical education at KI and thereby contribute to the advancement of the field through networking, mentoring, and collaboration as part of a broader strategic initiative.

Funding

  • The total funding available for this call is SEK 1.5 million per year, for a duration of three years.
  • The funding will be distributed among 2 to 4 selected applicants.
  • Awarded projects will receive funding starting in summer 2026.
  • Funding may be granted for a maximum of three years and will be distributed to the department where the applicant researcher is based.

Decisions and Reporting

  • The decision on funding will be made by the KI President in spring 2026.
  • To continue receiving funding, an approved mid-term report is required.
  • A final project report must be submitted upon completion, and project findings should be presented both at KI and externally.

Eligibility criteria 

  • The applicant holds a PhD but is not yet a full professor.
  • The applicant is employed at KI, or is formally affiliated with a KI department, and holds an employment in a Stockholm based healthcare organisation. The applicant may not be primarily employed at another university.
  • The applicant has previous experience of conducting research in the field of medical education and has published minimum three scientific articles in the field and is first or last author on minimum 2 of these.
  • The applicant conducts their medical education research primarily at KI (and not at another university).
  • The applicant commits to taking an active role in the medical education research network at KI for the duration of the project.

The foundation also co-funds Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education (KIPRIME) and the KIPRIME Fellows.
