Forskningsbeskrivning
- Volkan Özenci arbetar kliniskt vid Karolinska Universitetslaboratoriet och
forskar för att förbättra klinisk mikrobiologisk diagnostik. Målet är
dels att patienterna snabbare ska få effektiv behandling, dels att motverka
ökad antibiotikaresistens. Han har utvecklat en teknik för analys av
bakterier vid blodförgiftning, sepsis, som sänker tidsåtgången från 24
till 2–4 timmar. Den är idag införd på 40 procent av de stora kliniska
laboratorierna i Europa.
Hans forskargrupp genomför kliniska studier av nya produkter från en lång
rad medicintekniska bolag och har även två egna pågående ansökningar om
patent. Gruppen har också börjat forska om utveckling mot mer
miljövänliga kliniska laboratorier, mot bakgrund av att verksamheten har
extremt stor plastkonsumtion.
Undervisning
- Volkan Özenci är mycket engagerad i KI:s utbildningar, och leder flera
kurser inom klinisk mikrobiologi på läkarprogrammet.
