Exponeringsanalys och hälsoriskbedömning

Bristen på humana exponeringsdata är ofta ett problem vid riskbedömning av föroreningar och kemikalier i miljön. Min forskning bedrivs inom fältet exponeringsanalys som är en viktig komponent i riskbedömning och riskhantering. Exponeringsanalys omfattar allt från identifiering av exponeringskällor, -vägar och mönster i olika grupper av befolkningen till metodikutveckling inom biomonitorering, kemisk analysmetodik och exponeringsmodellering. Fokus är framför allt på toxiska metaller, men inkluderar även organiska ämnen. Den huvudsakliga målsättningen är att identifiera faktorer som har betydelse för exponering och dos samt att förfina och utveckla metodik för att inkludera dessa faktorer i exponeringsbedömningen, i syfte att ge ett bättre underlag för riskbedömning och -hantering.

Huvudsakligen studeras människors exponering för miljöföroreningar i livsmedel och förorenad mark. Fisk som är ett viktigt livsmedel ur hälsosynpunkt kan också innehålla miljöföroreningar i nivåer som kan skada människors hälsa. Ett pågående forskningsprojekt rör utveckling av en sannolikhetsbaserad exponeringsmodell för miljöföroreningar i fisk och utvärdering av risk och nytta med fiskkonsumtion. Ett annat projekt rör utveckling av en exponeringsmodell för barns exponering för persistenta organiska ämnen i bröstmjölk. Ett viktigt område är harmonisering av mätmetoder för exponeringsuppskattning för att erhålla jämförbara data mellan studier och över tid. Detta arbete drivs dels nationellt inom ramen för den hälsorelaterade miljöövervakningen (HÄMI), dels inom ramen för EUs sjunde ramprogram och projektet "Consortium to perform human biomonitoring on a European scale" (COPHES II).
