CfA Research Grants
The Center for Allergy (CfA) strives to support young scientists and foster interdisciplinary as well as international collaborations within the field of allergy research at Karolinska Institutet. To this end, we are announcing two new grants in 2025, Global Grants and Seed Grants. Two of each type will be granted.
Global Grant
With this grant we hope to promote internationalization, collaboration and excellence within the field of allergic diseases at KI. The purpose of the funding is to allow a KI-based PhD student or researcher to visit a research group abroad, or to allow for the invitation of an international PhD student or researcher to visit a group at KI. The funding can be used for travel and housing during the research visit period to e.g. start a new collaboration, learn a new method, write a paper etc. The projects may be basic, translational or clinical.
Eligibility
Senior PhD students (after half time review) and junior researchers with a PhD (awarded less than 4 years before the grant deadline). The applicant must be affiliated with or employed at KI, and perform the bulk of their research at KI.
Sum and usage of funding
Each grant is 50 000 SEK to be used until 2026-12-31. The funding shall be used for travel and housing during the research visit, either abroad (for a KI PhD student or researcher) or in Sweden (for an international visiting PhD student or researcher). Only one grant can be awarded per person.
Assessment criteria and review process
The reviewing of grant applications is done by the CfA steering board, led by the CfA chair. The assessment criteria are (score within brackets):
- Scientific quality and novelty of the proposed activities during the research visit (1-5)
- Qualifications of the applicant (1-5)
- Value of the proposed research visit in developing allergy research at KI (1-5)
- Feasibility of the proposed research visit (1-3)
Application
- A short description of the planned activities and purpose of the research visit (max 1 A4 page)
- Description of how the research visit will promote allergy research at KI (max 1/2 A4 page)
- Description of how the funding will be used (max 1/2 A4 page)
- Short CV of the KI applicant (max 2 A4 pages including 5 selected publications)
- Short CV of the international visiting PhD student or researcher (in cases that apply)

Seed Grant
Promote interdisciplinary collaborations and innovation within the field of allergic diseases at KI. This includes basic, translational and clinical research. The funding can e.g. be used to generate preliminary data for a new project/grant application, start a new project, or to develop or test a new method that has an important implication, or to test the feasibility of a clinical material for future studies or trials.
Eligibility
Senior PhD students (after half time review) and junior researchers with a PhD (awarded less than 7 years before the grant deadline). Each grant is awarded to a pair of PhD students/researchers who write and submit the grant application together as co-lead applicants (i.e. two applicants per grant). The applicant must be affiliated with or employed at KI, and perform the bulk of their research at KI.
Sum and use of funding
Each grant is 200 000 SEK to be used until 2026-12-31. The funding can be used for any KI-approved costs i.e. reagents, analyses, salary etc. including indirect costs. Only one grant can be awarded per person.
Assessment criteria and review process

- Qualifications of the two co-applicants (1-5)
- Value of the proposed research in developing allergy research at KI (1-5)
- Suitability and feasibility as a seed project (1-3)
- Degree of interdisciplinarity of the proposed research and synergy between the two co-applicants (1-3)
Application
- A short research project description (max 1 A4 page)
- Description of the synergistic roles of the two applicants in the research (max 1/2 A4 page)
- Description of how the research will promote interdisciplinary allergy research at KI (max 1/2 A4 page)
- Description of how the funding will be used (max 1/2 A4 page)

Decision
Decisions regarding both grants will be made by the CfA steering board and announced via email in August 2025.
Reporting and activities
CfA expects recipients of both grant types to report to the CfA steering board at the end of the grant period and to participate in CfA activities during the grant period. For global grants, the recipient is expected to present the outcomes of the research visit at a CfA symposia/seminar/workshop. In case of publications based on the grant, CfA funding should be acknowledged in the manuscript. Funding unused by 2026-12-31 shall be returned to CfA. You will be notified by email when the CfA expects a report.
