Principal Researcher | Docent

My group uses air sampling to study the survival and infectiousness of M. tuberculosis in aerosols, and to detect M. tuberculosis and other respiratory pathogens in cough and indoor air.

About me

  • My group works on tuberculosis.

I have more than 20 years of research experience with intracellular
pathogens, primarily Mycobacterium species, under Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2)
and BSL3, and in mouse models. From 2017-2025 I was Chairman of the Biosafety

Committee at Karolinska Institutet and helped to oversee KI's regulations on biosafety,
containment work in different biosafety levels and the handling of genetically-modified

microorganisms. Since 2019 I am Director of the BSL3 Biomedicum Core Facility in

Solna which supports research on risk group 3 bacteria, parasites and viruses.

Associate Professor of Immunology (Docent), Karolinska Institutet. 2014
Doctor of Medical Science (PhD) in Immunobiology, Karolinska Institutet. 2004
Master of Medical Science with a Major in Biomedicine, Karolinska Institutet. 1999

Research

  • My group is interested in airborne transmission of
Mycobacterium tuberculosis and in techniques to capture and analyze pathogens

in the air. We have developed a specialized platform in BSL3 where pathogens can be

safely and experimentally aerosolized, collected and analyzed. We use this platform

    to investigate the performance of in-house and commercial samplers for M. tuberculosis;

and to study the effects of aerosol transport on the survival, gene expression, infectivity

and immune response of M. tuberculosis.
