About me
I have an engineering background from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and I obtained my PhD in 2009 at Karolinska Institutet (KI). I did my postdoc at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London and I became a docent (imaging and functional medicine) in 2014 and professor in neurogeriatrics in 2020 at KI. I am the head of the Division for Clinical Geriatrics since 2015 and I have my own research group within the division. Since 2017, I am also acting/vice head of the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society.
Research
- The aim of my research is to combine different biomarkers looking at patterns of disease. Due to the complexity and heterogeneity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorder, using one biomarker is probably not enough. The focus of my research has long been on structural magnetic resonance imaging investigating patterns of atrophy, but my research extends to other imaging modalities such as MR-spectroscopy, resting state fMRI, MR-diffusion, positron emission tomography (PET) and computer tomography (CT) etc. Further, the combination of neuroimaging biomarkers with CSF and blood markers is of great interest. The need for advanced statistical tools is important when combing large amounts of data from multiple neuroimaging modalities. Combining multiple biomarkers with multivariate tools will hopefully aid in diagnosing the disease in an early stage which is important when effective treatments for AD can be administered, monitor disease progression, target the right population for clinical trial and understand the underlying mechanisms of different diseases.

- Swedish Research Council1 January 2026 - 31 December 2028Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD) are a significant and rapidly growing public health problems in the ageing population. The increasing costs of dementia represent a threat to societal sustainability unless effective preventive and therapeutic solutions are identified.This is an innovative project aiming to design a disease phenotyping framework, utilizing multimodal neuroimaging, taking advantage of machine learning to study large populations. The project consists of three work packages (WP) which will run in parallel during the duration of the project. In WP1 we aim to identify the underlying mechanisms driving the heterogeneity in ADRD through all stage of cognitive decline. We will target the role of different pathologies (AD, Lewy Body, and vascular), resilience mechanisms, and risk/protective factors and how they drive the neurodegenerative process and affect cognitive decline. In WP2, we will translate our findings from WP1 in real-world memory clinic cohorts to illustrate the clinical applicability of the results. Finally, WP3 will be proof of concept to validate that a deeper phenotyping is necessary to monitor and predict response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological (lifestyle) interventions.If the project is successful, the alignment of disease modelling and accurate tools for prediction will enable precision medicine approaches to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis and the personalization of treatment and prevention.

- Swedish Research Council for Health Working Life and Welfare1 January 2025 - 31 December 2028Research problem and specific questions Dementia poses a major public health challenge with no cure, underscoring the need for prevention by tackling risk/protective factors like social health (SHthe ability to engage meaningfully, maintain supportive relationships, and feel belonging within one´s community). Yet, studies often lacked a comprehensive SH framework bridging social and biological dimensions in linking SH and cognitive health and overlooked sex differences. Our project goal is to determine how SH influences cognition leveraging resilience mechanisms across the lifespan, considering factors related to women´s health and sociocultural aspects. This goal will be achieved through 3 research lines (RL) built on a novel conceptual framework from the European SHARED consortium, supported by FORTE. RL1 will investigate the impact of SH, from mid- to late-life, on cognition before dementia manifests, the role of multimorbid disorders and stress. RL2 will investigate how SH contributes to preserving brain integrity (brain maintenance, BM) and/or cognition amid neuropathological changes (cognitive reserve, CR). RL3 will investigate the role of sex differences in the SH-resilience relationship, focusing on sex-specific biological (e.g., hormones-related) and socio-cultural determinants.Data and method We will integrate longitudinal sociobehavioural data with clinical, brain imaging, and women’s health data from the Swedish Betula project (n=4,425, 53% womenage 25-95 yrs25-yr follow-up). We will validate our results externally using the UK Biobank (n=~500,000, 54% womenage 40-69 yrs10-yr follow-up). We will generate biological measures of BM and CR using our in-house artificial intelligence algorithm enable to predict the age of the brain from neuroimaging. Plan for project realisation This 3-year project will be conducted by a research team, which brings together expertise in geriatric epidemiology, psychology, medical sociology, neuroscience, and engineering. Design and methodological aspects are discussed in details in the next sections. We plan to disseminate our findings also outside the scientific community by engaging with local and national end-users. Relevance Our findings will assist clinicians/public health professionals in crafting tailored risk reduction strategies/interventions against dementia for both women and men. Targeting specific SH aspects can enhance cognition before dementia symptoms manifest, across relevant life periods.

- Swedish Research Council1 January 2023 - 31 December 2026Life means combining motor-cognitive skills, e.g., walking, talking and navigating. Aging or neurological diseases, e.g., Parkinson’s disease (PD) compromises these skills needed for an independent life. It is uncertain which brain alterations lead to these difficulties and how to target these heterogenous motor-cognitive difficulties. Current treatments apply a "one-size-fits-all" approach, which needs to evolve towards personalized rehabilitation, reaching beyond a simple adaption to disease severity.Our multimodal project combines physiotherapy, neurology, psychology and neuroimaging to characterize motor-cognitive skills during complex walking, identify underlying brain alterations and subtype PD to inform a novel exercise approach for people with PD. This 5 years proposal has 4 stages: 1) Exploring brain alterations and links to the motor-cognitive skills in healthy and PD 2) PD subtyping using neuroimaging, motor, cognitive and clinical data 3) Characterization of exercise responsiveness in PD and 4) Development and testing of a personalized motor-cognitive exercise program. We combine novel techniques for data collection with in-depth analysis of existing data (EXPANd trial). The results will have an immediate application and clinical relevance for personalized rehabilitation in older and PD. There is no cure for PD yet, thus positive findings would revolutionize treatment, giving new hope to patients for a life with improved health, independence and higher quality.
- Swedish Research Council1 January 2023 - 31 December 2026Aims: To examine mental and cognitive health in old age, their determinants and impact on functional ability and well-being, taking into account the complex interactions with age, sex, gender, socio-economic gradients, historical changes, psychosocial, neurobiological, and genetic factors occurring across the life course and in different birth cohorts.Methods: Representative birth cohorts from Gothenburg are followed longitudinallya) H70-study comprising 70-year-olds born 1901-02, 1922, 1930, 1944 and 1952-53b) H85-study comprising 85-year-olds born 1901-02, 1923-24 and 1930 c) the 95+ study (populations aged 95 and overN=1020)d) Prospective Population Study of Women (1462 women followed 50 years 1968-- 2018). In this application, we will examine those born 1952-52 at age 70, those born 1944 at age 79-80, and those born 1930 at age 95. The studies include psychiatric, somatic, audiological, opthalmological, psychosocial, genetic, dietary, and psychometric examinations, language technology, collection of blood, plasma, serum, and cerebrospinal fluid, examinations with brain MRI and PET, body composition DEXA, and assessment of functional abilities.Significance: The project is unique in relation to the long follow-ups of birth cohorts examined five decades apart, and the comprehensive multidisciplinary examinations, including examination of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. It has relevance for understanding mental and cognitive health in older populations.
