TraCeDem - about us

TraCeDem is a FORTE-funded research center dedicated to improving how we prevent, detect, and care for dementia across the entire course of the condition. Our goal is to add life to years and years to life by reducing dementia risk before onset, and by ensuring dignity and quality of life for all those affected across the entire dementia journey.

Sweden’s 2025–2028 National Dementia Strategy  explicitly supports integrated person-centered prevention and care throughout all stages of the disease. Yet, inequalities in access and outcomes persist, and both care and research remain fragmented.

We study a wide range of topics, from lifestyle and medical risk factors to safer medication use, better care coordination, digital tools, and support for both patients and caregivers.

Led by Karolinska Institutet, TraCeDem brings together a transdisciplinary team of researchers and professionals working closely with healthcare services, municipalities, patient organizations, and policymakers. By combining population data, clinical research, digital tools, and co-created solutions, TraCeDem aims to turn knowledge into practical improvements.

Our goal

To add years to life by reducing dementia risk before onset, and by ensuring dignity and quality of life for all those affected across the entire dementia journey.

Our mission

To transform dementia prevention and care through integrated, person-centred, equitable, and sustainable solutions by:

  • reducing risks (primary prevention)
  • enabling detection (secondary prevention)
  • enhancing quality of life (tertiary prevention)
  • ensuring dignity in advanced stages (quaternary prevention)

How will we make this happen?

  • By bringing together an interdisciplinary team of dementia researchers and care professionals from KI and beyond, supported by a strong record of collaboration and long-term external funding.
  • By partnering with thos who matter most, i.e. people with demention, informal caregivers, and municipal and regional care staff and managers, for evidence-informed change in policy and practice.
  • By leveraging science and innovation, including translational research, clinical and population-based data, digital health tools, and proven implementation models.
