Seeding grant for collaboration projects within Karolinska Institutet on movement and physical function

The Network for Movement and Physical Function is pleased to announce up to three seeding grants of 75,000–100,000 SEK each, to be used within one year. These grants aim to stimulate collaboration in movement science across different departments at Karolinska Institutet. Researchers leading collaborative projects involving at least two departments are eligible to apply.

Project period

One-year project, starting within three months of the decision (i.e., September 2026).

Eligibility:

 Applicants: Doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, or researchers with a PhD who are employed by or affiliated with Karolinska Institutet. Two applicants must be included in the application. At least one applicant must be a junior applicant, i.e.
being a doctoral student or holding a PhD obtained within 5 years of thesis defence and should be the main applicant.

Collaboration: The project must represent a new collaboration and involve at least two departments. Please specify the role of each partner and highlight the added value of this interdepartmental collaboration.

Only one application per person is allowed.

Budget

Each seeding grant will consist of up to 100,000 SEK and must be used during the 12-month project period.

What should the application include?

The application must be written in English and include the following three parts:

1: Merits of the partners

  • Names and short CV:s of the applicants (maximum 1 page per applicant)
  • List of publications (the 10 most relevant to the applicants)

2: Research plan (maximum 1 A4 page)

Include the following:

  • Project title in English and Swedish
  • Aim and research questions
  • Background and knowledge gap
  • Project plan, including materials and methods
  • Timeline
  • Key references

3: Project information (maximum 1 A4-page)

  • Relevance: Describe the relevance of your project to theresearch field of movement and physical functioning (see the network scope on our website).
  • Budget: Briefly specify your costs and how the grant will be used during the funding period.
  • Additional resources: Describe any additional resources available to the project (e.g., laboratory facilities, previous
    funding).
  • Interdepartmental collaboration: Briefly describe the roles of the different partners in the project and the added value of this interdepartmental collaboration.

All documents should be merged into a single PDF file and formatted in Times New Roman, 11 pt (1.5 line spacing).

  • Application deadline: May 29, 2026, 14:00 (Swedish time) 

Results from approved projects are to be presented at the annual meeting of the Network of Movement and Physical Function in 2027.

Grading procedure and criteria

Process

  • All applications that meet the eligibility requirements will be reviewed by members of the Steering Committee of the Network for Movement and Physical Function. Each member will independently assess and rank the applications based on the criteria defined below.
  • The Steering Committee will subsequently discuss the assessments and reach a consensus on the final ranking. The three highest-ranked projects will be awarded funding. Any potential conflicts of interest will be duly considered during the review process.
  • The decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Assessment criteria

  • Relevance: Assessment of the project’s novelty, scientific rigor, and alignment with the scope of the Network for Movement and Physical Function. 
  • Feasibility: Assessment of whether the research plan, including the timeline, supports the establishment of a productive collaboration within one year; the potential for continued collaboration; and the availability of additional resources to support the project.
  • Interdepartmental collaboration: assessment of whether the collaboration is interdepartmental and meaningful, and whether the roles and contribution of the applicant and project partner are clearly described. 
  • Juniority: Assessment of the extent to which the project involves junior researchers.
