Rolf Luft Award 2012
The 2012 Rolf Luft Award was given to Professor David John Mangelsdorf, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.
Mangelsdorf's work on nuclear receptors led to landmark discoveries of how regulatory pathways govern cholesterol, lipid, and bile acid homeostasis. He defined crucial signal-transduction networks in their entirety by identifying the ligands, target genes, physiological functions, and molecular mechanisms for several orphan nuclear receptors. Recently, he has characterized two new signaling pathways mediated by the novel endocrine hormones FGF19 and 21, and established their key roles in regulating metabolism.
