Undergraduate education at MEB
The department conducts education in the medical program, the master's program in molecular techniques in the life sciences, the master's program in biostatistics and data science, as well as commissioned training.
The education mission at Karolinska Institutet has to be carried out according to the framework set up by the program committee. A department has the responsibility as course provider and is therefore responsible for the course in its entirety. Courses are usually run in collaboration.
The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is responsible for the course Medical Scientific Theory and Method as well as the course Degree Project in Medicine in the Medical Program. MEB is also responsible for the course Biostatistics in the Master’s Program in Molecular Techniques in Life Science. Additionally, MEB will oversee five courses in the Master’s Program in Biostatistics and Data Science: Biostatistics 1, Biostatistics 2, Survival Analysis with Applications in Medicine, Study Design and Analysis in Medical Research, and Degree Project. MEB also provides commissioned education.
Responsible for undergraduate education (GUA)
Riitta Möller
Senior Lecturer/Senior PhysicianThe medical program
In the new 6-year Medical Program, MEB participates in the courses Basic Science 1 and Basic Science 5, providing instruction in biostatistics and scientific communication.
MEB is responsible for the course Medical Scientific Theory and Method (MVTM), which is conducted during the last 3 weeks of the 6th semester at the undergraduate level, comprising 4.5 higher education credits.
The purpose of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of medical scientific methodology and analysis, as well as to develop a critically reflective and research-ethical approach. The course prepares students for practicing evidence-based medicine and for critically following the development of medical scientific knowledge.
MEB is also responsible for the Degree Project in Medicine, which is at the advanced level and comprises 30 higher education credits, conducted during the 8th semester. The last degree project course for the 5.5-year program will be held in the autumn of 2024, and the first one for the 6-year program will be held in the spring of 2025. The overall aim of the course is to give students advanced knowledge by independently and individually, under supervision, planning and conducting a research-oriented thesis project in the main area of medicine. The goal of the degree project is to provide students with a solid foundation for evaluating new scientific findings that underlie modern medicine. The teaching should also inspire and motivate future physicians to maintain curiosity and a scientific approach in their professional lives.
