Collaboration in USA
Karolinska Institutet and USA has a long history of research collaborations and the co-publications are numerous.
American institutions are major co-publication partners to KI and collaboration with American universities exist extensively at all levels; undergraduate, advanced, postgraduate and at research level.
Research collaborations are spread over many different fields including neuroscience, cancer, genomics, infection, and immunology. The majority of these collaborations takes place between individual researchers and are not centrally regulated. There are however, some collaborative agreements, projects and activities that are initiated and supported centrally.
Institutionalized education and research collaborations with American universities and institutions include, but are not limited to, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Mayo Clinic and the Rockefeller University.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The KI-NIH Doctoral Partnership Programme in Neuroscience provides the possibility for doctoral students, from either the United States or Sweden, to divide their training for a doctoral degree between the two participating institutes. The students spend a minimum of 18 months of the project in an NIH laboratory and benefit from a broad scientific experience. The rest of the training period is spent at KI, and it is KI that confers the doctoral degree after four years of study. The aim is to promote ground-breaking research in fundamental areas of neuroscience and psychiatry that could lead to a better understanding of brain function, neurological diseases, neuropsychiatric disorders and new medical diagnostics and treatments.
Mayo Clinic
Over the years, more than 1000 students, researchers and employees have crossed the Atlantic and participated in activities at both Mayo Clinic and KI. This longstanding partnership has evolved throughout the years and includes successful research projects as well as unique collaborations in innovation, administration and education.
Rockefeller University
The Rockefeller University is a world-renowned center for research and graduate education in the biomedical sciences, chemistry, bioinformatics and physics. The collaboration agreement with KI covers three exchange programmes: Nicholson Lectures Programme, Nicholson Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme and Nicholson Exchange Programme for Research, Education, Technical/Administrative and Resource Center Staff.
Collaboration with USA: bachelor's and master's education
If you are a student at one of Karolinska Institutet's study programmes, you have great opportunities to carry out part of your education abroad. There are different options for studying abroad.
Students from the USA can study at KI through participating in exchange studies, programmes such as EuroScholars, or through enrolling in one of our Global Masters Programmes. There are a selection of global master and bachelor programmes open to everyone.
There are student exchange possibilities at KI. Course information, application rules and procedures are available to students at partner universities with which there is an agreement of exchange.
