Radiography is an exciting and important field of research in medical imaging and functional diagnostics. Research in radiography is focused on diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Developing and improving radiographic techniques and methods can increase the accuracy of diagnosis and enable more effective treatments. It is a rapidly evolving discipline where significant technological changes have transformed the profession and healthcare in a short time.
In the field of radiography research, the main focus is on improving the quality of care through the development and improvement of radiology services.
The division is responsible for the radiography nursing programme, a three-year course leading to a professional qualification to work as a radiography nurse and a bachelor's degree in radiography. The course is run in close collaboration with radiology clinics at five leading hospitals and their associated authorised private radiology units in the Stockholm area.
A radiographer is tasked with conducting diagnostic imaging procedures on patients, both in hospitals and private radiology units.
To become a radiographer at KI, one must complete a three-year Bachelor of Science degree. The education covers various subjects including anatomy and physiology, radiation physics, image diagnostics, patient care and communication, as well as pedagogic, healthcare ethics and law. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through clinical placements in different radiology units.
Effective communication skills are essential in radiography, as radiographers interact with patients from diverse backgrounds and should be able to explain procedures and provide reassurance to anxious patients. Moreover, radiographers must possess a sharp attention to detail, as they are responsible for producing high-quality diagnostic images that aid radiologists in making accurate diagnoses or treatment.
