Other accommodation alternatives
If you are not eligible for KI Housing accommodation or have not secured a place through KI Housing, you will need to arrange housing on your own. Below, we have compiled some helpful tips and resources to support you in your search for accommodation outside of KI Housing.
Finding housing on the private market
Finding affordable housing in Stockholm can be challenging—especially at the start of each semester when demand is high. We strongly recommend beginning your search as early as possible.
If you arrive in Stockholm without a permanent place to stay, make sure to arrange temporary accommodation such as a hostel or hotel. You can find more information and suggestions in the “Temporary Housing”section below.
Please note that finding accommodation on the private market may be tedious and time-consuming. However, with persistence, most people do find a suitable place to live during their time at KI.
Things to have in mind
Avoiding fraud: Although the majority of the rental advertisements are legitimate, it is important to stay cautious. Always visit the accommodation and sign a rental contract before paying any deposit or rent. Ask the landlord to show a valid form of identification when signing the contract to verify their details. Finally, only transfer the deposit to a Swedish bank account to reduce the risk of fraud.
Location: Stockholm is relatively compact and has an excellent public transportation system. Finding housing close to the university can be challenging, and it is quite common to commute around one hour to work or school.
Rent: The average rent for a private room in a shared apartment ranges from SEK 4,000 to 9,000 per month, depending on size and location. A studio apartment typically costs between SEK 7,000 and 20,000 per month. Accommodation in the city centre is usually much more expensive than in the suburbs. Always check with the landlord whether utilities such as electricity, internet, and TV are included in the rent.

Long term housing options
Housing foundations and companies
SSSB: If you become a member of the Student Union, you should sign up for student housing with SSSB if you are planning to stay for more than a year. The waiting list is quite long so you cannot expect to get housing during your first semester. You can register and start collecting credit days in the housing queue already before arriving to Stockholm and joining the union.
Wenner-Gren Foundations: Wenner-Gren Foundations offer apartments to foreign guest researchers working in laboratories in Stockholm. Applications must be submitted either before arriving in Sweden or within six months after arrival. Further information about their housing queue.
Stockholm Housing Agency - public housing queue
The Stockholm Housing Agency is a marketplace for available housing units in the city of Stockholm and its suburbs provided by different landlords. Read more about who can apply and how to join their housing queue (please note that you must have a Swedish ID number or a coordination number to be on their waiting list).
Private sublets for researchers/doctoral students at KI
Ads for accommodation to rent posted by private landlords who want to sublet their apartment to researchers and students at KI. The ads will be posted on this page for six weeks. Note that KI Housing takes no responsibility for ads that are posted.
Housing platforms for private sublets
There are several housing platforms in Stockholm offering a digital service that connects people looking for housing with those offering housing that can be found on Google. Please be aware that while these platforms make it easy to find available housing, it is important to stay alert for potential scams in order to avoid fraud.
Temporary housing options
There are numerous hotels, apartment hotels, and short-term accommodation providers available throughout Stockholm.
If you are looking for temporary housing near the KI Campus in Solna or Flemingsberg, you will find a wide range of options including hotel rooms and furnished apartments within walking distance or a short commute from the campuses.
