About me
My main area of research is health risk assessment of chemicals. It is a multidisciplinary field and I work in close collaboration with a large network of Swedish and international researchers, authorities and organisations. I am a member of the Nordic Expert Group for chemical risk assessment in occupational settings and part of the EFSA Advisory Group for Biomarkers of Effects. I also chair of the national committee for the European Registered Toxicologists. Moreover, I am the expert coordinator in chemical and toxicological incidents at the Centre for Health Crises at KI.
I am deeply committed to outreach and communicating knowledge about the health risks of chemicals. I have been engaged as an expert witness in the PFAS case in Kallinge, and I participated in the podcast documentary Mörkt Vatten (Dark Water) about the events there. Mörkt Vatten won the Swedish Radio Academy's Guldörat award in the Best Scoop category in 2023. Together with epidemiologist Emma Frans, I have produced and hosted the podcast series Riskzonen. Each episode provides a scientific perspective on events that have shaken the world and impacted how we view risks. The fourth season of Riskzonen was released in spring, summer, and autumn 2023 and was produced in collaboration with the Centre for Health Crises.
Disaster toxicology and the War in Ukraine:
In relation to the War in Ukraine there is a risk of release of chemicals from damaged chemical industry and transportation of dangerous goods. But exposure can also be related to chemical warfare agents and poisons that in recent years have been used to eliminate individual persons in several countries. As part of my research, I have studied the health risks related to airbourne chemicals, the effects of susceptible groups like asthmatics, and how the dose-response relationships can be calculated. I have also participated in the decision support system used by MSB (the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) and are regularly lecturing in emergency toxicology, preparedness and response.
Research
Current research projects as main project leader:
- Experimental design aligned with dose-response modelling as a means for 3R in toxicity testing (Financial support: Vetenskapsrådet)
- Bayesian dose-response modelling aligned with experimental design as means to improve chemical risk assessment (Financial support: Formas)
- Risk, Fara, Oro, Skada - ett kommunikationsprojekt (Finansiering: Formas)
- Kemiska olyckor i arbetslivet – systematisk analys av Giftinformationscentralens arbetsmiljörelaterade data (Financial support: AFA Försäkring)
Other reasech projects: - PERFORCE3, a Innovative Training Network about perfluorinated chemicals. (PI: Ian Cousins; Financial support: European Union’s Horizon 2020)
- Phthalates in female reproduction –impact of mixture composition on hazard characterization (PI: Pauliina Damdimopoulou, Karolinska Institutet, Financial support: Formas)
- New animal-free methods to meet the need for safe chemicals (PI: Elin Törnqvist, Karolinska Institutet, Financial support: Formas)
Teaching
My teaching activities include lectures, course leadership, supervising master and PhD student.
I have been the main supervisor for three PhD students:- Mia Johansson (2016) - Asthmatics as a susceptible population in health risk assessment of airbourne chemicals

Grants
- Swedish Research Council for Environment Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning1 May 2024 - 30 April 2026The project involves a popular science book and the organization of interdisciplinary seminars focusing on key issues in environmental medicine and society. The main emphasis is on persistent fluorinated environmental pollutants (PFAS). Primary target audiences, in addition to the general public, include stakeholders such as law, chemical engineering, history, and regulatory toxicology. The narrative has two main storylines:First, the historical connection from Nazi Germany and the U.S. atomic bomb to today´s global chemical industry and geopolitics. Companies were aware of the risks but used strategies to conceal them. The project investigates how science is employed to influence regulations.Second, the health of those affected, the challenges in "proving" harm, and risk communication. It examines issues of responsibility, including why it took society so long to take action. Researchers and their ties to the chemical industry are part of the narrative. The book forms a new genre - green crime - where the vulnerability of environmental science and the impact of the chemical industry on people´s health and trust are central themes. The ongoing Swedish legal case regarding contaminated drinking water in Ronneby provides dramatic opportunities to assess the collaboration between industry, authorities, and research. To engage stakeholders in the discussion, we will organize interdisciplinary seminars for target groups in related societal fields.
- Blood lipid profiling to explore effects of PFAS with relevance for cardiovascular disease in humansSwedish Research Council for Environment Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning1 January 2023 - 31 December 2025The estimated exposure and reported serum levels of PFAS, show that parts of the general population exceed the tolerable weekly intake and the highest exposure occur in areas with contaminated drinking water. One of the main human health concerns associated with PFAS exposure is perturbation of blood lipid homeostasis observed in epidemiological studies. Current risk assessments are hampered by a lack of understanding on the mode of action and the potential causal relationship with cardiovascular disease. In addition, combined effects of PFAS mixtures remain largely unknown. In this project we will elucidate the lipidomic profiles (lipidomics) in human blood samples representing populations with high and low levels of exposure. We will also use a prospective nested case-control study to identify lipid profiles associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Identified biomarkers from the epidemiological studies will be compared with results from experimental in vitro studies using human hepatocytes (HepaRG). This cell model will also be used to study the cellular regulation of lipids in relation to various PFAS and human relevant mixtures. By integration of the benchmark dose-response modelling approach, results from epidemiological and experimental studies will be transferable to a regulatory context and relevant for retrospective risk assessments as well as for prospective safety evaluations.
