About me

  • Adjunct Professor of Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the Department of Clinical
Neuroscience as of 1 April 2022.
Primary position: MR physicist at Karolinska University Hospital.

Research

  • Stefan Skare develops new techniques for rapid brain magnetic resonance
imaging, MRI, for patients who are unable to keep their head still. A brain
MRI scan normally takes 20 to 30 minutes, but with his in-house developed MRI
software he has managed to obtain acceptable image quality in a tenth of that
time. The software his research group has developed is now used by
researchers around the world and has started to be introduced into hospitals.
His group has also developed techniques that allow involuntary head movements
during the brain MRI scans. The patient’s head movements are continually
registered and the MRI scanner makes real-time adjustments. If this technique
could be used widely clinically, it would mean that many children would not
have to be sedated before a brain MRI scan.
The innovations are based on a self-developed simplified way to program the
MRI systems from the company GE Healthcare, which are used at the
hospital’s department of neuroradiology and by many researchers around the
    world.
