About me

  • Dr Jovan P. Antović MD, PhD is a professor in coagulation and clinical chemistry and a research group leader at the Department of Molecular Medicine & Surgery. He is responsible for the clinical chemistry part of the course Human Disease - 2 of the MD program at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. On the clinical part, he is a senior consultant and medical head of coagulation diagnostics at Clinical Chemistry, Karolinska University Laboratory, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. He is also a visiting professor in hematology at the Faculty of Medicine Nis and Faculty of Medicine Kragujevac in Serbia. He is a member of EQUALIS (Swedish external quality assessment for clinical laboratory investigations) expert group in coagulation. He is a co-chair of the Standardization Scientific Committee on the Control of Anticoagulation of the International Society on Thrombosis & Hemostasis. He is the head of a small core facility – KARMITH (Karolinska Microscopic Imaging in Thrombosis & Hemostasis) KARMITH Core Facility | Karolinska Institutet (ki.se).

    He received his MD degree in 1993 and specialist degree in Internal Medicine - Hematology in 1998 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nis, Serbia, working at the Department of Hematology, Clinical Centre Nis. After a short stay with the Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis at the University of Chapel Hill, NC, USA, he worked at Karolinska University Hospital and Institutet since 2000, excepting 20 months (July 2004-March 2006) when he worked as International Medical Advisor in Novo Nordisk. Dr Antović earned a PhD degree in coagulation/clinical chemistry at Karolinska Institutet in 2003 and a specialist degree in Clinical Chemistry at Karolinska University Hospital in 2011.

    He participates in several national and international projects in both thrombosis and bleeding and leads a project about global hemostatic assays in hemophilia with the main focus of the research on cardiovascular status in aging patients with hemophilia. He is also interested in the diagnosis and treatment improvement of Von Willebrand’s disease, another bleeding disorder. In addition, his areas of interest are microparticles and cross-talk between coagulation and inflammation and markers of thrombin generation and visualization of the fibrin structure. On the clinical side, he is particularly interested in improving the laboratory diagnostics of microangiopathies, e.g., heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and antiphospholipid syndrome. He is also focused on laboratory methods for follow-up of direct oral anticoagulants.

    He was a main supervisor and co-supervisor to several PhD students and post-docs. Currently, he is a co-supervisor to two PhD students working on global hemostasis and microparticles in different clinical conditions and a main supervisor to two post-docs engaged in the basic and translational projects investigating links between hemostasis and cancer.

    Dr Antović is the author and co-author of more than 80 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and co-editor of guide textbook Essential guide to coagulation (two editions). He was a member of the Editorial Board of J Thromb Haemost and currently is a Review Editor on the board of Thrombosis of Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine.
