About me

  • Senior researcher (2016-), research group leader (2012-), at the Medical Management Centre, Karolinska Institutet. Through co-creative collaborations with clinical managers and patients, my research focuses on how to develop innovative ways to improve health care for staff and patients by deepening and broadening our perspectives on quality improvement (including lean & Value-Based Health Care), AI implementation, complexity, medical leadership and change management, health care innovation, medical education, team training, patient safety, costing, reimbursement models, business model thinking, Triple and Quadruple Aim, and project management. I teach (3000+ hrs) at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive education levels.

  • European Co-care Learning Ecosystems
    Forte
    1 January 2026 - 31 December 2027
The CoCare project provides evidence-based pathways for a paradigm shift in primary and community care practices and policies, aiming to disrupt traditional, fragmented, and provider-centric models by focusing on the upscaling of integrated, person-centred, and actor-empowering care ecosystems. In CoCare, existing care ecosystems encompassing diverse models of integrated care in five European countries are systematically identified and documented by utilising an ecosystem methodology. These national cases exemplify fhow participatory approaches, person-centred innovation, and empowered individuals can contribute to a more integrated and responsive care system. In Sweden, we will work with Regions Stockholm and Skåne who provide comprehensive community, primary, secondary, and tertiary care. This enables them to creatively address how to integrate care when a patient needs services from different care levels. The Advanced Medical Care at Home (Stockholm) and Mobile Primary Care Teams (Skåne) are two approaches to person-centred specialized care at home using mobile healthcare teams and advanced medical technology. The case study will be performed in collaboration with the teams under the auspices of the Region Stockholm Division of Primary and Community Care (“Stockholms läns sjukvårdsområde, SLSO”) and Region Skåne and look at the introduction of tailored digital monitoring and communication tools and the mobilization of patient and next-of-kin resources as active caregivers. Through the micro-level evidence generated through the project's activities, a complexity-sensitive framework for European co-care learning ecosystems will be developed to scale-up integrated, person-centred care systems. The framework will encompass policy recommendations, best practices, and strategies for overcoming the challenges of larger scale implementation. The co-care learning ecosystem framework will also address the potential for cross-border collaboration and the development of common standards across European countries. The project aims to foster a culture of co-creation and co-learning across the European community care ecosystems. Through series of participatory workshops, conferences, and other dialog-embedded activities, it will foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among health and care providers, policymakers, researchers, community organizations, and end-users. CoCare will engage with policymakers, healthcare leaders, and key decision-makers to translate its findings into concrete policy actions through evidence-based policy recommendations that address the key challenges of scaling-up co-care ecosystems, including the need for regulatory reform, changes in funding models, and the development of new infrastructure and technology to support integrated care. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the future of primary and community care in Europe by promoting the adoption of integrated, person-centred co-care learning ecosystems to improve health outcomes, efficiency, and a more equitable and accessible healthcare system. The project will strengthen the role of community organizations and actors in providing essential support and services to individuals and families. It will promote a more sustainable and resilient healthcare system by fostering collaboration among stakeholders, improving the efficiency of resource utilization, and addressing the challenges of an aging population with an increasing chronic disease burden.
  • New Models to Deliver Healthcare (NMDH)
European Institute of Innovation and Technology
    1 September 2024 - 31 December 2025
HVCEdu consortium includes all members of the value chain from patients and caregivers to industry, including healthcare prevention & deliver, and academy & research organizations (AQuAS, EAVBHC, DSPC, KI, UniHa, HUVH, ULS, Borås University, UPV, Medtronic, and Air Liquids) with a recognized knowledge in education and implementation of new models of delivering health care (NMDH). Our vision is to create a comprehensive and personalized program of new models of independent modules aligning with the EIT Health implementation matrix focusing on integrated, preventive, personalized, value(s)-driven, and sustainable health care. HVCEdu will bridge the gap between theory and practice to develop actionable knowledge to facilitate the implementation and adoption of NMDH tailored to the diverse European (EU) health contexts. Together with EIT Health, we can educate a broad number of stakeholders with the necessary skills for implementing and adopting high value care to transform EU healthcare systems.
  • European Commission
    1 January 2024
The overall objective of the APOLLO2028 project is to provide health and care workers, organisations, and healthcare system funders and policy makers with research-backed innovative solutions to help improve mental health, wellbeing, and capacity to be more resilient to changing environments (especially daily pressures and extreme events) at the workplace. The originality of the project is to consider resilience in health care in a holistic approach to build individual, team and organizational capabilities to face the next extreme events and daily pressures. Therefore, we will study individual factors affecting resilience, group factors, organizational factors, and develop a model involving all types of factors. This model will serve as a basis for the production of guidelines to be disseminated to health and care workers, their managers, as well as policy makers and health systems funders. We will also develop an AI-based system to support in the identification of stress factors and recommend actions. We will involve all the stakeholders in a co-design work to finalise our solutions. We will also review the cost effectiveness of our solutions. The main impact of our project will be a reduction of stress factors at the workplace, and an improvement of resilience of all the health and care workers. We will ensure our solutions are disseminated to all EU member states and adapted to the specifics of each of their health care systems.
