About MCC
Medical Case Centre (MCC) conducts research in health professions education with a global perspective and we integrate experience from art in our work. We are a group of educationalists, physicians, and psychologists and our role today is mainly focused on research in medical education.
About MCC
Medical Case Centre (MCC) is mainly a research group in health professions education, currently conducting research projects in emerging filed such as Team-Based Learning (TBL) and neuroimaging of the brain in clinical decision-making situations. One major project is the implementation of the first pilot year of the new transition year (“BT-doctors”) into Swedish residency training. This work investigates the integration of international medical graduates into the Swedish health care system.
We also organize global events to bring key opinion leaders together in the areas of health professions education.
Collaborations across disciplines
MCC has a very close collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital Residency Programs. We also have a formal collaboration with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), USA, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
MCC always takes an entrepreneurial approach to educational development and research. We are working across disciplines, professional boundaries and always try to encourage innovation and creativity. A global perspective and global collaborations are characteristics for MCC. We cover the art sectors such as visual arts and performing arts, global broadcasting, architecture, and urban planning in combination with our research in health professions education.
How it all started - the history of MCC
MCC was started in early 2000 at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge (MedH) to support Karolinska Institutet’s faculty in the transition into a more active student learning strategy. Our field of expertise became case-based learning. Over the years our role as a centre for faculty development and curriculum design grew. We became leaders for a major project at Karolinska Institutet and the Karolinska University Hospital about aligning physical learning spaces and the curriculum.
Our role became to lead the repurposing of all physical learning spaces at Karolinska Institutet’s two campuses. This was further expanded to lead the briefing process of two new laboratory buildings at the time, Neo and Biomedicum regarding all physical learning spaces, formal and informal spaces, plus the program brief for the construction of the new Karolinska University Hospital building in Solna, Stockholm. We have since, been hired as global experts in aligning physical learning spaces and curricula around the world, including Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Mexico, Qatar and Kuwait.
Since 2018, when the Unit for Teaching and Learning (UoL) was created at Karolinska Institutet, all faculty development services and faculty support have been transferred to UoL. MCC works closely with UoL in many projects. Our role today is mainly focused on research in medical education.
