Berzelius discovered selenium in 1817. To celebrate 200 Years of Selenium Research, we organized an international selenium conference at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm from August 13-17, 2017.

The conference covered all fields of current selenium research, with a special focus on biology, medicine, biomedicine, and the environment. It was officially composed of two serial symposia, held in parallel at the same site for the first time, with overlapping plenary sessions, poster sessions, and social events. The two symposia were the 11th International Symposium on Selenium in Biology and Medicine and the 5th International Conference on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health.
