Health risk assessment of endocrine disruptors

Course Dates

Planned to be given in spring 2025.

On-line course

The course will be given as an on-line course, with synchronous lectures, exercises and group assignments using online webinar tool Zoom and Karolinska Institutet’s learning management system Canvas. Participants must be able to attend daily at 9-17 CET, and have access to a computer, headset, webcam and internet connection.

Course organiser

The course is organised by the Advanced International Training Programme in Health Risk Assessment at IMM in collaboration with the Doctoral programme in metabolism and endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet, course number 5241 and the Executive and Professional Education Office at Karolinska Institutet.

Learning outcomes

After the end of the course the student should be able to:

- Describe molecular mechanisms and potential adverse effects of endocrine disruptors
- Explain methodologies to study endocrine disruptors
- Apply methodology for identification of endocrine disruptors according to EU scientific criteria and guidance
- Identify and discuss challenges in health risk assessment of endocrine disruptors

Content

Endocrine disruptors are defined as an exogenous substance or mixture that alters function(s) of the endocrine system and consequently causes adverse health effects in an intact organism, or its progeny, or (sub)populations.  Endocrine disruptors act via hormone receptors and by altering hormone levels and have been implicated in several endocrine-related diseases. The course will include molecular mechanisms of endocrine disruptors, from molecular initiating events to adverse effects. Methodologies for identification and analysis of the endocrine disruptors will be addressed. Identification of endocrine disruptors based on EU scientific criteria and guidance will be addressed. Attention will be given to future challenges in health risk assessment of endocrine disruptors.

Teaching and learning activities

Teaching and learning activities include lectures, exercises and group assignments. All activities will be on-line using the online webinar tool Zoom and Karolinska Institutet’s learning management system Canvas.
