  • Since 2003, I have worked clinically at Karolinska University Hospital with assessment and intervention of children with severe speech sound disorders. My professional curiosity and frustration concerning the lack of treatment progress in children with childhood apraxia of speech and in children with speech disorders related to cleft palate with/without cleft lip resulted 2020 in the thesis titled: Speech and language in 5-year-old children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech or Cleft Palate

Forskningsbeskrivning

  • Thesis: Speech and language in 5-year-old children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) or Cleft Palate (CP±L) The overall aim was exploratory: to describe and improve our understanding of speech and language in children with CAS at 5 years of age. The project assessed and described the speech of children diagnosed with CAS and a cohort av two years of patients born with cleft palate ± lip. About 50 % were found to have persistent speech errors at age 5. Children with CP±L were therefore screened for speech and motor speech difficulties and when difficulties were present evaluated looking for deficits related to apraxia. Because having a severe speech sound disorder can mask language deficits, children’s language competence was also assessed and communication abilities in every day life studied using parental ratings. The emerging speech and language profiles within groups and between groups have increase knowledge about the varying difficulties seen in Swedish children with CAS and CP±L. The thesis work is now followed by a longitudinal treatment study using DTTC targeting school-aged children with CAS.

Undervisning

  • I am involved in teaching, giving lectures and workshops within the course on speech and language disorders in childhood and adolescence at the Speech Language Pathology program. I supervise students examination projects and are looking forward to supervising master- or Ph-students in the future.
