How to handle Shadow AI?
Welcome to a lunch seminar where we will discuss the growing phenomenon of Shadow AI.
By this, we mean the increasing use of personal AI accounts by researchers, healthcare professionals and people in other sectors to carry out work-related tasks.
- What challenges does Shadow AI create?
- Are there any notable examples or incidents?
- What are the potential benefits?
- And how should organisations approach the use of shadow AI?
The seminar will begin with a short presentation by Fredrik Carlsson, followed by an open discussion led by Magnus Boman.

As part of the initiative Advances in Artificial Intelligence at Karolinska Institutet, we will celebrate and recognize a significant achievement in AI made at KI during the past year, either through the development of new AI methods or through innovative applications of AI. Nominations are now open, and we encourage you to nominate a candidate whose work deserves recognition.
The award will be presented on 2 December at the event Advances in Artificial Intelligence at Karolinska Institutet, organised annually by KI’s Centre for AI Innovation.

Photo: Erika BellanderPaving the way for AI innovation within intensive care
KI researcher and physician Villiam Kildal has received Region Stockholm’s Innovation of the Year Award for the aICU project, which is helping to lay the groundwork for future AI-assisted intensive care at Södersjukhuset.
“Connecting AI research environments with real-world intensive care is a major challenge. Few hospitals worldwide have managed to build robust systems for systematically testing AI models in clinical practice using large-scale healthcare data. We need to determine whether AI can truly improve healthcare, and that can only be assessed in real clinical environments. Evaluations based on historical data alone are not enough,” says Villiam Kildal.

Recently, several EU-funded Swedish AI initiatives came together to establish a more structured collaboration. Our shared ambition is clear: To amplify the impact of our work and strengthen support for researchers, public sector organisations, and companies that are developing and deploying AI solutions. KI is leading the Swedish node of one the initiatives, TEF-Health – the European Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics.

Photo: Erika BellanderWriting the AI/ML component of your research application
Are you planning to use AI in your research project? The Centre for AI Innovation presents a checklist covering the 12 most important points to include when describing the AI component of your research application, as well as tips on how to prepare for receiving funding.
Research proposals increasingly include AI and machine learning components, but how can we assess whether these are well designed and appropriately described?
The checklist covers resources, methodology, validation, statistical considerations, and generalisability. Relevant for anyone with a background in medical sciences who is writing, reviewing, or supporting research projects involving AI.
