Portal South - about us

Portal South Core Facility is located at the Preclinical Laboratory (PKL), Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge. It is a joint core facility between the Department of Laboratory Medicine (LABMED, KI) and PKL. We offer importing/exporting of live animals, biological products, embryos/sperm, etc. and provide researchers with the opportunity to rederivation and cryopreservation of their strains.

Portal South is responsible for the import and export of various animal strains from and to research groups around the world. Imports and exports take place in accordance with the current Swedish legislation. To promote the international collaboration, investigators at Karolinska University Hospital (K)/Karolinska Institutet (KI) can import different animal strains – even infected animal strains, through cleansing or rederivation at our unit.

Rederivation can also take place via IVF (in vitro fertilization). We help you to freeze mouse strains when they are not needed, which fulfils one of the 3R's principles, where the researcher reduces the number of animals kept continuously in breeding. The portal is responsible for import, export, air transport, provision of various certificates and contact with authorities in different countries to import/export animals in the simplest possible way. In addition, we follow the transportation chain until animals reach the respective research group.
