About me
- I am a researcher at the Dpt. of Clinical Neuroscience (Centre for Psychiatry Research) and also affiliated to the Dpt. of Medical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet.
I completed my M.Sc. in criminology (including studies in psychology, sociology and law) at Stockholm University and obtained my PhD at the Dpt. of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet. After my PhD, I undertook postdoctoral fellowships at the Dpt. of Medical Epidemiology & Biostatistics and the Dpt. of Clinical Neuroscience, both at Karolinska Institutet. Following this, I completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Dpt. of Psychiatry, University of Oxford. Subsequently, I returned to the Dpt. of Clinical neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet. I also assumed a two-year visiting researcher role at the University of Oxford.
My research is funded by ALF Medicin, Karolinska Institutet Funds and Systembolagets Alkoholforskningsråd.
Currently, I supervise:
Anders Nilsson (postdoc, Dpt. of Clinical Neuroscience, Centre for Psychiatry Research, KI)
Andrea Klang (PhD student, Dpt. of Medical Sciences, Acquired Brain Injury, Uppsala Universitet), co-supervisor
Research
- My research focuses on psychiatric epidemiology with a specific interest in pharmacoepidemiology. I study the risks and benefits of pharmacological treatment with a focus on psychiatric and behavioural outcomes such as depression, anxiety, suicide, overdoses, accidents, and violence. I also study pharmacological treatment strategies for substance misuse. More recentlly have been investigating the link between traumatic brain injury and psychiatric disorders, including the pharmacological treatment strategies used to treat these disorders in traumatic brain injury patients.
My research is epidemiological and register-based, meaning that I analyse observational data from Swedish national registers, the Swedish Twin Register, and cohort studies (e.g. The Consequences of Antisocial Behaviour in Adolescence Study - CASBA).
I am also involved in epidemiological research projects on psychiatric and behavioral health, including substance misuse, gambling disorder, gaming and mental health, violent offending, intimate partner and domestic violence, and risk assessment tools for re-offending and suicide.
My principal collaborations outside of my research group are with Prof. Seena Fazel (Dpt. of Psychiatry, University of Oxford), Dr. Elham Rostami (Neuro, KI), Prof. Ellenor Mittendorfer-Rutz (Insurance Medicine, CNS, KI) and Prof. David J. Sharp (Brain Sciences, Imperial College London).
