About me

  • Dartmouth College NH, USA 1973-74, MD Karolinska Institutet 1980, PhD 1987, Associate professor 1990, Professor of anestesia & intensive care at Karolinska Institutet (Södersjukhuset) 1997-2006, Head Research & Development Södertälje Hospital 2006-2018 and senior researcher 2018-2021. I have held position as adjunct professor at Linköping University 2010-2016 and Karolinska Institutet 2017-2022, thereafter researcher and Senior professor at Karolinska Institutet at Danderyds Hospital (KIDS). Visiting professor 3 months per year in Riga, Latvia, 2016-2018.

I have an interest in fluid therapy and developed ethanol montioring as a safety tool in transurethral surgery in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1990 I invented "volume kinetics" which is an adaptation of pharmacokinetics for infusion fluids, which has therefater been the subject of many publications and several PhD programs. I have served as main supervisor of a total of 18 PhD programs and been co-supervisor of 4. I have published approximately 400 scientiic papers in peer-reviewed journals and edited 4 books of fluid therapy in the perioperative setting, most recently "Hemodynamic monitoring of fluid therapy during surgery" (Cambridge University Press 2024) together with Alexandre Joosten and Maxime Cannesson.

I have served at several positions in the European Society of Anaesthesiology 2012-2018, including the Research Committee, Nominations Committee, and as Swedish representative in the organization´s Council.

Research

  • My  interests include safety issues during transurethral surgery, in particular with regard to fluid balance issues (fluid absorption and undetected hemorrhage). In recent years, the focus has been on pharmacokinetics of infusion fluids, which has been used to answer various physiological questions and explored the adapation to anaesthesia and surgery. Maldistribution of fluid in preeclampsia and sepsis are currently studied.

Teaching

  • Robert Hahn served as Vice Chairman of the Board for Postgraduate Studies at Karolinska Institutet 1997-98 and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Karolinska Intsitutet (Södersjukhuset) 1997-2000 and 2002-2005.

Hahn was responsible for the course in anesthesia and intensive care for MD students at Karolinska Institutet (Södersjukhuset) 1997-2006. He organized and taught elective courses in fluid therapy and pulmonary physiology twice a year between 1995 and 2006 and lectured occasionally in elective trauma courses.
