About me

  • Martin Turesson is a PhD student in Christian Rück's research group at the Centre for Psychiatry Research, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, and a resident physician in psychiatry in Region Stockholm. He is a member of Team Modelling, led by his main supervisor John Wallert, and of the Centre for Applied Psychiatric Research and Innovation (CAPRI).

Martin received his medical degree from Linköping University in 2024 and his Swedish medical licence in 2025. Clinically, he has worked in emergency and inpatient psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and outpatient ADHD care.

Research

  • Martin's doctoral project concerns patients leaving involuntary psychiatric care, a group with a particularly high risk of suicide and other adverse outcomes in the period after discharge. He is developing a population-based risk calculator that estimates the risk of suicide, suicide attempt and involuntary readmission, to support clinicians when they plan discharge. The calculator builds on linked Swedish national registers covering every episode of involuntary psychiatric care in Sweden between 2010 and 2024. It is co-created with clinicians and patient representatives and will be evaluated in a clinical pilot followed by a register-based randomised controlled trial.

The preliminary thesis title is “A population-based risk calculator for adverse outcomes after discharge from involuntary psychiatric care”. His supervisors are John Wallert (main supervisor), Christian Rück, Manne Sjöstrand and Lina Martinsson.

Teaching

  • Martin teaches on the course Artificial Intelligence in Mental Healthcare, where he lectures on suicide and AI and leads seminars, and he leads the seminar on personality disorders on the Medical Programme.

Before coming to Karolinska Institutet he was head teaching assistant in scientific method, statistics and epidemiology on the medical programme at Linköping University, where the students voted him Outstanding Inspirer of the Year in 2023.
