About me

Ljubica Matic obtained a PhD degree in Medical Biochemistry from Karolinska Institute, Sweden in 2012, and a MSc degree (Cum Laude) in Molecular Biology from Belgrade University, Serbia in 2003. Since 2012 she works as a senior researcher and Assistant Professor in the Vascular Surgery Group, Karolinska Institute. Her main focus is on novel molecular mechanisms of vascular disease particularly related to smooth muscle cells, as well as on biomarkers and therapeutic approaches in carotid atherosclerosis. She applies integrative systems analyses, combining bioinformatic and clinical data studies with murine models of vascular injury and disease, while in vitro systems based on primary cells and tissue explants are utilized for functional and mechanistic investigations. Her research has been distinguished with several grants and fellowships from the Swedish Society for Medical Research (SSMF) and Heart-Lung Foundation (HLF). Since 2004, she has also been continuously devoted to pedagogical work as a lecturer, supervisor and course leader for PhD students in the Cardiovascular Program and undergraduate students in the Medicine and Biomedicine Programs at KI. As a reviewer she is active in several journals and funding agencies, i.e. American Journal of Human Genetics, Journal of Internal Medicine, Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), while as a board member she contributes to the KI Respiration and Inflammation Network (KIRCNET;
