- Associate Professor (Docent in Neuropsychology).
- Director of the Center for Alzheimer Research at KI

I have a Degree in Psychology (2005), Advanced Studies in
Neuropsychology (2007), and Master in Clinical Psychology (2014), all these
from the University of La Laguna, Spain.
My PhD is in Biomedical and Clinical Research (2012, University of La
Laguna, Spain).Docent in Neuropsychology, Karolinska Institutet (2020)
I have been working at Karolinska Institutet since 2012. Currently I am an
Associate Professor at the Division of Clinical Geriatrics (NVS Department,
Karolinska Institutet, Sweden), and a Research Affiliate at the Department of
Radiology (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, US).
I am leading several lines of research and I supervise several students
including PhD, Master, Postdoc, and Undergraduate students.
Research
My main research interest is Normal Aging and neurodegenerative disorders
such as Dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer’s disease. My main focus is
on cognition and neuroimaging but genetic factors, CSF biomarkers, and
clinical and demographic factors are part of my research as well. I have a
strong interest in multivariate analysis and artificial intelligence as well.
*Projects available for students (Master, Undergraduate, Guests, etc.):**- "Dementia with Lewy bodies": *The second most common cause of dementia
but, however, commonly miss-diagnosed. You will help to understand this
disease better. You will investigate brain degeneration and clinical
symptoms, and you will also study the role of concomitant pathologies such as
Alzheimer's and cerebrovascular disease.- *“Brain atrophy and subtypes of neurodegenerative disorders”:* You
will study brain atrophy using different techniques. You will also study
different subtypes of Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases, looking at
prevalence, clinical characterization, progression over time, etc.*- "Advanced neuroimaging of the cholinergic system": *You will be able to
model and study the brain cholinergic system /in vivo /by using different
MRI-based techniques.- *"Cognitive reserve":* You will investigate the fascinating topic of
cognitive reserve. We will study the neuroanatomical basis of cognitive
reserve but also how this can be used clinically.- *“Subjective Cognitive Decline”: *You will investigate the clinical
value of subjective cognitive complaints in cognitively normal people, and
their association with neuroimaging, CSF biomarkers, cognition, emotion, and
several psychological factors.
