Bowen Tang

I am a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Donghao Lu’s research group at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. I received my Bachelor of Medicine degree from Wuhan University, China, in 2018, and completed my MSc in Epidemiology and PhD in Medical Science at Karolinska Institutet in 2020 and 2025, respectively. My doctoral research was conducted through a joint doctoral program between Karolinska Institutet and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

My doctoral research focused on investigating the effects of existing medications on biological aging and Alzheimer’s disease, using causal inference approaches such as target trial emulation and Mendelian randomization. Through this work, I developed extensive expertise in pharmacoepidemiology, molecular epidemiology, causal inference, and advanced statistical methods.

My current research focuses on women's mental health and medication use during pregnancy, particularly the effects of psychiatric medications on maternal and offspring health. I am especially interested in integrating machine learning methods with causal inference frameworks to improve the analysis of large-scale longitudinal healthcare data and generate reliable real-world evidence on medication safety and effectiveness.

More broadly, my research aims to bridge modern computational methods and causal epidemiology to better understand medication effects, support clinical decision-making, and improve maternal and offspring health.
