Mats Sundin Fellowship
Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the University of Toronto (U of T), in collaboration with former professional hockey player Mats Sundin, have established the Mats Sundin Fellowship in Human Development and Health.
This fellowship builds upon a long-standing and successful doctoral course partnership between KI and U of T, which began in 1996.
Established in 2012
In 2012, Mats Sundin donated SEK 2.2 million to launch a joint postdoctoral program between KI and U of T, known as the Mats Sundin Fellowship. Each university contributed an additional SEK 1 million, with further support from other generous donors. Since then, Mats Sundin has continued to support both institutions in various ways. In 2017, he also established his own foundation, which now collaborates with KI and U of T.
Focus on infant and child health
The fellowship aims to provide advanced scientific training to develop future leaders in science and medicine in both Sweden and Canada. It places particular emphasis on maternal and infant health, neurodevelopment, and regenerative medicine. The program supports research projects in both Stockholm and Toronto, by funding a postdoctoral fellow for two years through a project grant.
The selected postdoctoral researcher will be designated a Mats Sundin Fellow and will engage with scientists, scholars, and clinicians from both institutions to conduct research focused on improving child health.
