Brian David Hodges

Visiting Professor of Medical Education at the Unit for Teaching and Learning as of 4 March 2026. Primary position: Professor at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Brian Hodges is a psychiatrist, educator and scientist and a leading expert in healthcare professional competence and how education and examination can best be designed to promote learning – and ultimately patient safety. His research combines the development of new education and assessment tools with empirical studies of how they function in practice.

In recent years, he has become increasingly interested in the ways technology, particularly AI, shape our learning and professional competence and identity. Professor Hodges asks questions about what we need to learn, how knowledge is to be assessed and which traditional methods we should keep and which we should abandon. His belief is that these questions should not be decided by tradition or intuition, but through empirical research focusing on what makes a difference for patients, healthcare professionals and health systems outcomes.
