About me
- I am Associate Professor and Head of the Division of General Practice and Primary Care at Karolinska Institutet. My research focuses on improving primary care for older adults with multimorbidity and mental health conditions through the development, implementation, and evaluation of person-centred and integrated care interventions. I hold a combined academic-clinical appointment at Karolinska Institutet and Liljeholmen University Primary Care Center, where I work as a specialist in family medicine. My research is closely informed by clinical practice and focuses on improving care for older adults with multimorbidity and complex health needs in primary care.I combine qualitative research, co-design methods, complex intervention research, and epidemiology, with a particular focus on supporting proactive care for older people with complex health needs. Building on earlier work, including the completed Health and Life in Balance pilot study, I lead and collaborate in several research projects aimed at improving quality, coordination, and outcomes of care for older adults. I work closely with national and international research networks in primary care, ageing, and multimorbidity.Alongside my research, I am actively engaged in medical education at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. I am course director for Clinical Medicine 9 in the six-year medical programme and teach qualitative methods and complex interventions within doctoral education. I also supervise doctoral students and early-career researchers. My leadership roles include coordinating research initiatives in general practice at KI, serving on collaborative research committees with healthcare partners, and leading interdisciplinary research networks focused on multimorbidity and ageing.

Current research projects
Beyond Guidelines: Pilot Testing of a Clinical Support Tool for Care of Older Adults with Complex Health Needs
This project evaluates the Beyond Guidelines Clinical Support (BGCS) tool, developed by geriatricians, general practitioners, and researchers in Region Stockholm. The tool supports clinical decision-making for older adults with complex health needs by complementing disease-specific guidelines with a stronger focus on patients' goals, functional ability, and life circumstances. The study examines feasibility, usability, and effects on care coordination across primary and geriatric care settings.KOMPASS Project
A participatory action research project that brings together older adults, primary care, and social services to co-create integrated services and strengthen coordination of care.Monitoring Older Adults' Health for Preventive and Early Interventions
Evaluation of the Health Assessment Tool (HAT) as a decision-support instrument for identifying preventive and early intervention needs among older adults in Swedish primary care.LUST Project
Development of a primary care intervention to promote sexual health, well-being, and a sense of security among older adults.MIRACLE-S Cohort
A series of population-based cohort studies using machine learning and traditional epidemiological methods to investigate multimorbidity and its association with a range of health outcomes. Current work includes examining vulnerability to heatwaves and other health risks among older adults with complex health needs.Selected completed projects
Health and Life in Balance
A pilot study that developed and tested a proactive, person-centred approach to primary care for older adults with multimorbidity. The findings provide the foundation for several ongoing intervention and implementation studies.
Teaching
- I teach at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels within medicine and primary care. I am course director for Clinical Medicine 9 in Karolinska Institutet's six-year medical programme and course leader for doctoral courses in Introduction to Qualitative Research and Complex Interventions. My teaching focuses on clinical skills, clinical reasoning, patient-centred communication, and research methods. I have extensive experience in curriculum development, assessment, and supervision of medical students, residents, and PhD students.

- Swedish Research Council for Health Working Life and Welfare1 April 2024 - 31 March 2029Research problem and specific questionsWorldwide, welfare societies strive to overcome fragmentation of services through increased integration. Despite this, evidence and support is lacking to guide local actors in social services and primary care on how to co-create integration with and for end users, such as older people. The aim is to, together with local actors and older people, develop and evaluate a research-based toolbox to integrate services for older people in need of both social services and primary care. What support do local actors need to co-create, test and monitor improvements of integrated services? What content, structure and design are needed in a toolbox to support local actors in co-creating, testing, and monitoring integrated services? What is the feasibility, perceived value, and impact of the toolbox?Data and methodThis participatory action research project comprises of three work packages (WP). In WP 1, we will use a participatory, longitudinal multiple case study design including four cases to explore actors’ need of support. In WP 2, we will use a Delphi-study design and participatory methods to develop the toolbox. In WP 3, we will use an observational case study design to evaluate feasibility, value, and impact. Data will be generated through structured and semi-structured observations, focus group and individual interviews, and surveys. Data will be analyzed with qualitative and quantitative methods.Societal relevance and utilisationA welfare society reform is launched in Sweden to integrate services and meet the needs of an aging population. However, the task of developing, implementing, and evaluating integrated services is a complex challenge that requires collaborative approaches, involving multiple stakeholders and end users. Yet, this task has been delegated primarily to local actors with limited decision-making mandates and possibilities to involve end users. The toolbox will support local actors with practical tools to co-create integrated services with and for older people.Plan for project realisationThe project will be conducted in collaboration between five Research and Development Units in Stockholm with partnering stakeholders in social services, primary care, and pensioner organizations. Costs for stakeholders’ involvement are included in the budget.
- Swedish Research Council1 December 2023 - 30 November 2026This study aims to prevent the development of dementia in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) through innovative solutions for early detection, precision diagnostics, and individualized evidence-based prevention and treatment. The epidemiological part will focus on two aspects: the impact of depression and sleep disturbances on cognitive impairment and dementia development and use register data and AI to develop a risk prediction model to identify people at risk for MCI, Alzheimer disease, and other dementia early in primary health care. Both risk factors and protective factors will be examined, thus the model will suggest individuals who should be further evaluated for MCI, Alzheimer´s, and other forms of dementia and provide support for preventive advice and interventions. The clinical part aims to determine the clinical and health economic value of a precision diagnostic algorithm based on a combination of digital cognitive tests and blood-based biomarkers in the assessment of subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) in primary care. The study will actively screen for SCC among individuals at increased risk of dementia, with risk factors including age, hypertension, and/or type II diabetes mellitus. Digital cognitive tests and blood-based biomarkers will be utilized to diagnose SCC, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia due to Alzheimer´s disease, as well as to examine how these biomarkers predict disease conversion after two years.
