About me

  • I am a Docent in Physiology and Assistant Senior Lecturer in the Division of Clinical Physiology at Karolinska Institutet.

Research

  • An overarching theme of my current and planned future long-term research concerns the control and regulation of skeletal muscle mass and function. Particularly in the context of athletic performance, disease and aging, I am interested in how human skeletal muscle responds and adapts to increased or decreased use. In this work, the functional, metabolic, morphological and molecular adaptations to acute and chronic resistance training and/or aerobic exercise are investigated.

I have also worked on a project investigating the effects of cross-hormone therapy in transgender individuals. This work has also led to publications addressing the difficult issue of transgender athletes' participation in sport. In recent years, collaboration with the Swedish Football Association and the Swedish Ice Hockey Association has led to studies examining the role of growth and maturation in team sports and the evaluation of bio-banding as a complement to traditional age grouping in sport.

Teaching

  • My general area of expertise is human physiology and sports science, with particular expertise in exercise physiology. My teaching activities are mainly related to the study programs Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Biomedical Analytics at Karolinska Institutet. I work both as a course leader and as an examiner. I am also course leader for a contract education course in advanced exercise physiology (4.5 credits) and teacher for the PhD course "Writing Science and Information Literacy".
