About me
- Dr. Tewodros Seyoum is a vibrant midwifery leader who has delivered excellence in education, research, and practice in the last 15 years. Tewodros was the first Ethiopian Midwife to obtain a PhD in Midwifery. Currently, he is undertaking a postdoctoral fellowship at Karolinska Institutet after receiving a highly competitive fellowship from the African Research Excellence Fund.
Tewodros has experience building strategic partnerships with academia, UN organizations, and NGOs globally. He has led a fruitful collaboration between the University of Gondar (Ethiopia) and Karolinska Institute (Sweden) to strengthen the PhD in midwifery program in Ethiopia.
Beyond my remarkable contribution as a midwifery educator and researcher, I have worked closely with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Midwives Association. He is a part of the National Research Advisory Council on Maternal Health at Ethiopia's Ministry of Health, which works to strengthen quality standards in the country's healthcare system. As an executive board member of the Ethiopian Midwives Association and a member of the International Confederation of Midwives African Regional Professional Committee, Tewodros also demonstrated leadership in midwifery policy and practice in Ethiopia and the African region.
At most, Tewodros has the most potent personal qualities, like being interactive, energetic, thinking strategically, motivating, and inspiring others with the right balance of creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm.
Research
- Dr. Tewodros engages in Midwife-led implementation research on sexual, reproductive and perinatal interventions. Tewodros shared his research findings through journal articles, policy briefs, and scientific presentations. Currently, Tewodros is supervising six PhD and four masters students in Ethiopia, Sweden and Canada.
As a chief and lead investigator, Tewodros has received and led more than five international grants and fellowships that contribute to better outcomes for women, their families, and society. Currently, he is leading an Erha-funded health system research project aimed at evaluating the implementation of midwife-led abortion care in the humanitarian areas of the Amhara region, Ethiopia, together with other transnational researchers in Sweden, Canada, and the United States. This project engages stakeholders like research users (Ethiopian Ministry of Health), Knowledge amplifiers(Ipas Ethiopia), and People affected by the crisis(women and midwives).
Teaching
- I teach professional and research courses such as global health contemporary issues of
midwifery and women’s health, family planning, obstetrics, and qualitative
research methodology for masters and Ph.D. students.
