Research

  • Stefan Agewall and his research group study how temperature and temperature changes affect the risk of myocardial infarction and how air pollution and drug treatment influence the disease risk in relation to temperature and temperature changes. To do this, they use data from SMHI (the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) and the SWEDEHEART registry with close to 229, 000 patients. Rapid changes in temperature are expected to increase globally as a product of climate change. If it transpires that certain temperatures or changes in temperature increase the risk of heart attack, it will be possible to give patients better advice on how to act in such situations. If certain drugs also turn out to affect the risk, the drug regimens can be adjusted accordingly. On a societal level, it is also important to know whether and, if so, how air pollution affects cardiovascular disease.
