This Research Project concerns a 'supraproject' involving several nested projects. Although these include specific themes, what unites them is the common methodological and procedural interest in the field of measurement. The realization of this 'umbrella' project is in the "Research Network for the Development of Measurement Instruments and Application to Measurement Models in Epidemiology" (Rede Aferição/RA). The central axis of AR is the development and cross-cultural adaptation of structured measurement instruments used in empirical/quantitative epidemiological research and, by extension, the application of measurement models from the perspective of structural equation models (causal). Being made up of a constellation of research groups, RA encompasses many national researchers and students of various levels (and international by extension). There is also a teaching component aimed at disseminating methodological knowledge for epidemiological application (development of didactic material and courses). Information on active thematic research, collaborators (human resources) and partner institutions can be found on the RA website (http://site.ims.uerj.br/pesquisa/redeafericao/) and in the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil from CNPq (http://dgp.cnpq.br/dgp/espelhogrupo/6940177657423382#identificacao).

Smoking is a major public health problem worldwide and is related to several chronic diseases with high morbidity and mortality potential. It is considered the main cause of preventable death. Primary Health Care (PHC) in this context is a strategic scenario for addressing this problem. The Community Health Service (SSC) of the Conceição Hospital Group develops smoking cessation groups in its 12 health units, following the recommendations of INCA and the Ministry of Health. Patient motivation is considered the main factor in the success of the attempt to discontinue this habit. Motivational Interviewing (MI), a technique developed by Miller and Rollnick since the 1980s, which uses the exploration of motivation with the objective of promoting behavioral change, has demonstrated success in several situations where this is the basis of treatment, such as in situations of addiction and chronic diseases. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of MI in the treatment of smoking in the context of PHC. To this end, a randomized clinical trial is proposed, promoting EM training for professionals who coordinate smoking cessation groups in 6 of the 12 SSC teams, comparing the results, through quit rates, after one year, with teams that used only the conventional approach. Previous studies on EM and tobacco, although many with positive results, generally used it in an individual and brief approach, in different scenarios, and there is a lack of evidence on its use in groups and in PHC. Therefore, the present study has the potential to help offer other PHC services a high cost-benefit alternative to address the problem within the reality of the SUS.

The emotional quality of family relationships, such as cohesion, which expresses affection and bonding between family members, can affect oral health behaviors, as it influences parents' practices. Studies that investigated family factors associated with oral health did not delve into psychosocial issues. Given the lack of data in the literature and the knowledge that family relationships can influence the occurrence of pathologies, it is important to verify the influence of these relationships on the oral condition of preschool children. The objective of this cross-sectional study is to evaluate the association between family cohesion and dental caries in preschool children in the city of Diamantina/MG. This study will be carried out with a representative sample of preschool children aged 36 to 71 months enrolled in private and public schools in the city. Through a pre-structured questionnaire, administered to parents, information on sociodemographic variables will be collected. Family cohesion will be assessed using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale (FACES III), self-reported by the child's mother or main caregiver. Subsequently, a clinical oral examination of the children will be carried out in the preschool itself. Dental caries will be detected using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II). Statistical analysis will be performed using SPSS 20.0 and will include descriptive analysis (variable frequency analysis), bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis (Poisson Regression).

The objective of this macroproject is to evaluate the systemic impact of periodontal diseases. Due to its infectious-inflammatory character and its high prevalence reported in the literature, periodontal diseases have been associated with several diseases and systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, preterm delivery, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, among others. The multifactorial nature of all these diseases and conditions makes the identification of new independent and modifiable risk factors of fundamental importance. The use of experimental models that allow the control of confounding factors and the analysis of several aspects of this relationship (clinical, immunological and microbiological) determines which groups or subgroups are most affected by periodontal disease. Based on the results of this study, the objective is to establish innovative multidisciplinary prevention and intervention strategies, which will improve the clinical status and quality of life of these patients. Included as subprojects: 1. Oral and systemic outcomes of periodontal treatment during pregnancy 2. Profile of subgingival bacteria in pregnant women: response to periodontal treatment and association with prematurity and low birth weight. 3. Periodontal disease, metabolic syndrome and changes in glycemic homeostasis. 4. Association between oral health and physical fitness in military personnel. 5. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment on metabolic syndrome markers and on the quality of life of individuals with metabolic syndrome. A randomized clinical trial will be conducted with patients from the pre-diabetes endocrinology outpatient clinic of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre and the dental clinic outpatient clinics of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul School of Dentistry who have a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and periodontitis. The clinical trial will consist of an arm receiving immediate periodontal treatment (test group) and a further arm receiving delayed periodontal treatment (control group). The study will last 6 months, after which individuals in the control group will receive the same treatment as the test group. A trained interviewer will administer a sociodemographic questionnaire to collect data regarding income, educational level, behavioral habits, and medical and dental history. A complete periodontal examination will be performed at 6 sites per tooth on all teeth present at baseline and 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment. In addition to the tests required for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, the same blood tests will be requested at 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment (total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein). Plasma aliquots collected at each experimental time point will be stored at -80°C for analysis of interleukin-6, TNF-α, GLP-1, and adiponectin. Gingival crevicular fluid and supragingival and subgingival biofilm will be collected at each clinical examination. The Brazilian-validated versions of the OHIP 14 and WHOQoL Bref questionnaires will be administered to assess quality of life at baseline and at the end of the 6-month study. The primary outcome will be changes in serum glycated hemoglobin levels, and secondary outcomes will be changes in total WHOQoL and OHIP scores, and serum C-reactive protein and fibrinogen levels.

Clinical and radiographic monitoring of completed endodontic treatments is necessary to monitor the health status of the site that underwent the intervention, and thus determine whether or not the therapy was successful (European Society of Endodontology, 2006). It is known that several factors, both local and systemic, can influence healing. The objective of this study is to observe the rate of patient return, as well as the success or failure of the treatments performed, considering smoking habits. All patients who had completed endodontic treatments at the Dentistry Division of the Canoas Air Force Hospital (Canoas, RS, Brazil) between 2008 and 2010 will be recalled. After agreeing to participate in the study, they will undergo anamnesis and clinical and radiographic examination. The data collected will be entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for later statistical analysis.

The waiting time interval for the placement of dental implants in patients who have undergone radiotherapy in the head and/or neck regions remains a controversial issue, mainly in relation to the amount of time required for revascularization and recovery of bone tissue located or close to the irradiated area. Bone tissue in the jaws (mandibular and maxillary) may present sequelae after radiotherapy in the head and/or neck regions. Among these, osteoradionecrosis, which may manifest as trauma to the bone tissue after extractions and/or placement of dental implants. The objective of this systematic review of clinical trials with meta-analysis is to verify whether the waiting time interval for rehabilitation with dental implants after radiotherapy in the head and/or neck regions is a determining factor for success. And to verify whether a time interval of up to six months or less may or may not be a determining factor for the occurrence of osteoradionecrosis.
