    Qiaolin Deng received her professional training in developmental neurobiology, stem cell biology, and single-cell technology, focusing on the molecular mechanisms involved in cell fate specification and transcriptional regulation during embryonic development. She established her lab in 2015 with the support of Young Investigator grants from several prominent funding agencies, including the Swedish Society for Medical Research, the Swedish Medical Research Council, and the Karolinska Institutet Central Faculty Fund. Currently, her lab is funded by prestigious grants such as the VR Consolidator Grant and the Wallenberg Academy Fellow Grant, along with several other grants. Qiaolin also serves as a Board Member of StratRegen (https://ki.se/en/research/about-stratregen).

Research

  • Our lab investigates the developmental principles of germline specification in health and disease using mouse models and human stem cell cultures. Moreover, we investigate how maternal diseases impact the health outcomes of future offspring through developmental programming by placentas and germline modulation, a process known as developmental origins of health and disease. Our current research focuses on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and diabetes in women. 

  • We use single-cell sequencing on human placentas to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying disease. We study germ cell specification processes with disease-derived human iPSCs differentiation system to investigate both developmental and disease mechanisms. We also develop disease-specific trophoblast organoids to examine the placenta's role in fetal development and maternal-fetal interactions underlying developmental programming. Our lab has also established microfluidic coculture systems to better mimic physiological and pathological uterine conditions on organogenesis in humans. Furthermore, our disease modeling of PCOS and diabetes in mice offers a valuable in vivo system to investigate molecular and physiological mechanisms in offspring's reproductive and metabolic functions. We aim to translate these findings into humans by leveraging our human cohort and biobank resources through collaboration.
