Research

  • In my daily clinical practice, I devote most of my time and commitment to children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Children and adolescents with IBD can sometimes be seriously ill and require advanced medical and surgical treatments. Suffering from a chronic bowel disease at a young age can have major consequences for the affected children's current and future quality of life.

The aim of my research is of course to improve the care of children and adolescents affected by IBD. In my research, with the support of both local registers (Stockholm County children's health care) and national health data and quality registers, I have looked for risk factors for suffering from IBD early in life and tried to characterize it for the childhood years typical disease picture and prognosis. I am now participating in a larger project that starts from the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, Solna, whose aim is to use data from national registers to describe the long-term consequences (physical and mental health, growth, educationetc) from suffering from IBD during childhood and adolescence.

Teaching

  • For more than 20 years, I have actively participated in the annual week-long national courses in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition for coming pediatricians that we organize in Stockholm. I am a frequent lecturer in pediatric gastroenterology in general and pediatric IBD in particular at courses organized by the profession, authorities and companies.

During the years 2014-16, I was attached to Addis Ababa University as an examiner (associate professor) in pediatric gastroenterology.

I have authored several national guidelines in pediatric gastroenterology and since 2008 I am co-author and since 2017 editor of the Swedish Pediatric Association's annually updated national guidelines for pediatric IBD. I have participated in several national comprehensive guideline works on IBD as a representative of pediatric gastroenterology.
