About me

• Miguel G. Borda, MD, PhD, skillfully blends his medical know-how with
research expertise.
Borda took his medical studies and specialization in geriatric medicine at
the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. His primary focus
lies in dementia research, functional decline, sarcopenia, and frailty.
With an in-depth understanding of the distinctive healthcare needs of older
adults, his research endeavors are directed towards elevating the quality of
life for aging individuals.
He earned his PhD in medicine from the University of Stavanger and Stavanger
University Hospital, with a thesis titled ''Clinical and Neuroimaging
Prognostic Markers in Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia: The Role of
Muscle Status and Nutrition.'' Guided by the overarching hypothesis that
dementia transcends being solely a brain disorder, his work furnishes
compelling evidence that dementia indeed assumes a systemic nature. The
manifestations in other bodily parts or systems hold significant implications
for the onset and prognosis of dementia. The thesis underscores the vital
role played by nutritional and muscle status in the realm of dementia.

Research

• At present, Borda´s research revolves around crafting personalized and
preventive approaches for dementia. These approaches consider factors beyond
the brain, including the muscular system, and encompass multidimensional
interventions like exercise and nutrition.

Vulnerability, understanding and treatment of behavioral disorders in dementia

Both basic work for understanding the variation in behavioral disorders in dementia and planned intervention study on Cannabidiol for agitation in Alzheimer's disease. As part of my postdoc I have participated in 4 publications which is finished in 2021, I have a PhD student and a future PhD student as a co-supervisor. My work has been characterized by the pandemic where the main focus with intervention study has been exposed to both shallow safety and academic benefit of the study. I have also actively participated in user involvement through the preparation of a new plan for graduate schools for users in projects. Through subject days and research days, I have participated in implementation and public knowledge of the topic.

Association of Malnutrition with Functional and Cognitive Trajectories in People Living with Dementia: A Five-Year Follow-Up Study. J Alzheimers Dis. 2021 Jan 13. PMID: 33459715. Shown choir important focus on nutrition and nutritional status is for the course of dementia patients. We found clear results that this was valid for all types of dementia diagnoses. Surprising and new knowledge was that the result was only for functional impairment and not cognitive impairment. This led to SESAM's editorial in Neurology, published in 2023.

Benzodiazepines and antidepressants: effects on cognitive and functional decline in Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. Int J Geriatr Psychiatry. 2020 Dec 31. PMID: 33382911. This publication demonstrated the important and clear effect of benzodiazapines on patients with dementia. Despite warnings, it is very common for the elderly, and especially with depression, to be prescribed such medications. We showed that the exact combination of antidepressants and benzodiazepines is closely linked to increased dysfunction. Such information is directly relevant to current practice for vulnerable elderly people.

Differentiating traits and states identifies the importance of chronic neuropsychiatric symptoms for cognitive prognosis in mild dementia. Alzheimer's Dementia. 2021 Feb
13 (1): e12152. This study is a complex data analysis that takes into account both the variation between different symptom variations and the progression of dementia in two different types of dementia. The main question is whether the psychiatric symptoms' effect on cognition is short-lived so that treatment will also help for cognition or whether the damage is so significant that one takes with it a loss of cognition despite improving the symptom. We showed that psychiatric symptom symptoms largely mark long-term changes. The consequence of this finding is that the focus on prevention and treatment should continue for a long time.

The Truth behind the Zeros: A New Approach to Principal Component Analysis of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Multivariate Behav Res. 2021 Jan-Feb
56 (1): 70-85. PMID: 32329370 is an analysis of the main method of our Neuropsychiatric Inventory's mathematical properties in complex analyzes. The problem is that the questionnaire to a large extent shows the normal situation score as 0. This means that the data becomes both binary and longitudinal. Current issues are central to a number of other psychometric tests. The study shows how one can better take this into account. The study was conducted in collaboration with internationally known researchers such as Cummings and Selbæk.

The main work in the project, which is an intervention study on the use of cannabidiol for agitation in dementia (CanADA), has unfortunately been postponed due to the pandemic. These are reports independently. Due to the pandemic, I was on leave much of the year (8 months). We have 12 new brains waiting for analysis that will make our pathological material softer.
