Research

  • My research focus is experimental traumatology in a defense medicine context, which includes trauma pathology, prehospital and intra-hospital treatment. The research targets increased survival through improved medical care at the site of injury and during subsequent care, specifically up to and during damage control surgery (NATO role 1 and role 2). We conduct research in three focus areas: prehospital care and protection, neurotrauma, and military medicine of the future. These include reducing avoidable deaths due to severe hemorrhage or lost airways, strategies to reduce death in traumatic brain injury, and reducing injury when wearing body armors or helmets (Behind Armor Blunt Trauma, BABT). Improved methods of airway control, bleeding control and patient stabilization are fundamental for successful casevacs to surgical care, which ultimately will improve survival, both in civilian and military settings.
