Maryam Bergstrand

I work as lecturer in the division for orthodontics at the department of dental medicine. My role involves:

• lecturing undergraduate and graduate students.
• clinical as well as scientific guidance.
• clinical work as an orthodontist.
• involvement in research.

My research interest, in addition to orthodontics, also builds on the scientific work I have previously devoted myself to, which demonstrated that glial cells in peripheral nerves constitute an unexpected source of stem‑cell‑like cells. These cells were shown to differentiate into pulp cells within the tooth, as well as odontoblasts and mineral‑producing cells that contribute to repair processes, for example following dental trauma. The scientific findings helped clarify the contribution of nerves to craniofacial and dental development, as well as to organ development and regeneration.

I value teaching and have done so for many years, both clinically and theoretically, for undergraduate students as well as qualified dentists and other professionals.
