Maryam Bergstrand

I work as a lecturer in the Division of Orthodontics at the Department of Dental Medicine. My role includes:

• delivering lectures to undergraduate and graduate students
• providing both clinical and scientific supervision
• working clinically as an orthodontist
• participating in research activities

In addition to orthodontics, my research interests build on my previous scientific work, which demonstrated that glial cells in peripheral nerves represent an unexpected source of stem‑cell‑like cells. These cells were shown to differentiate into pulp cells within the tooth, as well as odontoblasts and mineral‑producing cells that contribute to repair processes, for example following dental trauma.

These findings helped clarify the role of nerves in craniofacial and dental development, as well as in organ development and regeneration.
