About me

  • Adjunct Professor of Clinical Physiology at the Department of Molecular
    Medicine and Surgery as of 1 April 2021. Primary position: Consultant at
    Karolinska University Hospital.

Research

  • As a researcher and clinical physiologist, Maria J Eriksson uses ultrasound
    technology to describe heart and blood vessel function in different types of
    cardiovascular disease, inclu- ding heart failure and valve disease. Much of
    her research concerns how the rapid technical developments of recent years,
    with improved hardware and more powerful software, can help in the
    understanding of cardiovascular disease and how it can be put to clinical
    use. The emphasis of her work is on developing methods of diagnosis and
    prognosis, and evaluating treatment efficacy. One area of study is the
    factors that can predict the normalisation of myo-
    cardial structure and function after surgery for different types of aortic
    valve disease. Eriksson is also collaborating with preclinical and clinical
    researchers to identify disease mechanisms and potential targets for new
    therapies for heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
