About me

  • Previous roles
    - Project leader for Erasmus+ project ENVISION_2027 (2021-06-01 - 2023-06-31)
    - Project leader for educational development (practical training, virtual labs) for the Biomedicine programmes (2017-2021)
    - Course director for the course "Frontiers in Life Science 1" (2015-2017)
    - Responsible for the course lab in "Molecular Medicine" within the Bachelor programme in Biomedicine (2011-2014)

Research

  • My research interests span both biomedical science and health sciences education.

My earlier biomedical work focused on molecular mechanisms in adipose tissue biology, particularly metabolic regulation and inflammation, and on how these processes influence vascular function.

Building on this foundation, my current scholarly focus is in health sciences education, with a particular interest in integrating technology‑enhanced learning (TEL), such as virtual laboratories and AI‑supported learning design. I also explore how international and intercultural collaborations contribute to educational quality and student development across Nordic–Baltic biosciences programmes.

I am interested in how sustainability and planetary health education can be strengthened through interdisciplinary learning and systems thinking, and how game‑based learning can support this by immersing students in complex scenarios that promote integrative reasoning and reflection.
In addition, I explore professional identity formation, focusing on how reflective practice cultivates responsibility, judgement and ethical values.

Teaching

  • I am passionate about education, in particular professional development and lifelong learning.

My teaching and course leadership emphasise technology‑enhanced learning (TEL) within higher education, developed through local and international collaborations.

My pedagogical development work focuses on digitally supported learning environments created through both local and international collaborations. This work is informed by the TPACK (Technological–Pedagogical–Content Knowledge) framework, which integrates pedagogy, disciplinary expertise, and digital learning into coherent educational design.

I have integrated course‑based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) to offer research‑connected learning experiences for students.
I also draw on game‑based learning to foster systems thinking and deepen student engagement.

As Course Director, I lead curriculum design, course development, quality assurance, and budgeting. I also support faculty in delivering active and meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for their future careers.

As coordinator and project leader of the Nordic-Baltic BalticSeaBioMed network, I lead cross‑institutional collaboration that creates interdisciplinary and intercultural learning opportunities, strengthening KI’s internationalisation and students’ readiness to work in diverse academic and professional contexts.

BalticSeaBioMed is a collaborative network in the field of Biomedicine comprising the Universities of Eastern Finland (UEF), Southern Denmark (SDU), Turku (UTU), Vilnius (UV), Åbo Akademi (ÅAU) and Karolinska Institutet (KI). We represent a successful, wellfunctioning network with an established track record, and demonstrate a capacity for continuous development and renewal. In this second renewal application for 2025-2026, we address the urgent topic of global health by applying state-of-the-art biomedical methodologies into research concerning the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals, and couple this with the development of pedagogical approaches to train students in skills/competencies required for future employability and successful careers. The network started in 2013, originally “NordBioMedNet” and with a slightly different set of partners to those in the current application, to make the individual biomedicine Master’s programmes at partner universities stronger and internationally more competitive. With the support of Nordplus and Erasmus+, the network has successfully achieved its goals by making competencies unique to each partner university, and educational activities developed by each partner, available to students within all the partners’ programmes. Within the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership programme, the network has successfully accomplished two projects: Open Educational Resources in Computational Biomedicine (OERCompBiomed), and European Network for Virtual Lab & Interactive Simulated Online learning 2027 (ENVISION_2027). We have developed a range of open educational resources to facilitate the exchange of state-of-the-art expertise between network partners including virtual/ online practical training to complement traditional practical training in the lab. BalticSeaBioMed continues to develop and expand upon this important work.
