About me
Jonathan is a professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University and an emergency physician and trauma team leader in an inner city tertiary hospital. He is also the co-chair of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons Clinician Educator diploma program, and the assistant dean of
the McMaster Education Research, Innovation and Theory (MERIT) program.
Research
- Clinical reasoning and diagnostic error: Investigating cognitive processes and biases in medical decision-making.
- Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME): Co-developer of frameworks and assessment systems, including programmatic assessment and entrustable professional activities.
- CanMEDS Framework: Co-editor of the 2015 revision, shaping global standards for physician competencies.
- Clinician Educator Role: Defining competencies and training pathways for clinician educators.
- Educational technology and digital scholarship: Exploring podcasting pedagogy, social media in education, and online faculty development.
Teaching
- Graduate Supervision: Supervisor and committee member for MSc, MEd, and PhD students across Canada and internationally.
- Curriculum Development: Co-founder of the Royal College Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competence program.
- Faculty Development: Founding instructor in the ALiEM Faculty Incubator and contributor to MERIT and other development programs.
