About me

  • I began my medical studies at Uppsala University in 1993 and graduated in 2002. During this period, I was also a PhD student and defended my preclinical thesis on the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans at Uppsala University in 2000.

Since 2004, I have worked as a physician at Karolinska University Hospital in the Department of Endocrinology and I am a specialist in internal medicine and endocrinology/diabetology. From 2011 to 2015, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Geneva University Hospital in the group of Professor Richard W. James, investigating lipoprotein functionality in cell-based models. Between 2017 and 2020, I served as Head of the Endocrinology department Huddinge, where I currently work as a senior consultant. I am since 2026 a senior lecturer at the Department of Medicine Huddinge (MEDH).

Research

  • My research is epidemiologically oriented and focuses on inherited blood lipid disorders and their role in the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The research in the field of lipid disorders has a broad scope, encompassing aspects such as sex differences, prevention, socioeconomic factors, and health economics.

Within clinically oriented research, regional and national prospective projects are conducted to evaluate the benefits of screening and diagnostics of blood lipid disorders in the general population. We also work on developing machine learning models trained on large patient cohorts to improve understanding of the relationship between lipid disorders, the development of atherosclerosis, and preventive medical treatment. Ultimately, this work may contribute to the development of national guidelines that can be implemented in clinical practice. I also have a strong interest in lipid disorders in patients with diabetes, where the interplay between diabetes, metabolic control, and genetic factors is studied, as well as its impact on cardiovascular disease.

I am part of the Cardio Metabolic Unit (CMU) at Karolinska Institutet, a research collaboration conducting innovative and translational research and education in cardiometabolic diseases, in close collaboration with Associate Professor Daniel P. Andersson and Professor Paolo Parini.

I have served, and continue to serve, as principal investigator in multiple clinical trials (phase II and phase III) aimed at developing novel lipid-lowering therapies.

Teaching

  • I have extensive experience in teaching students at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet since 2004. At the hospital, I regularly supervise medical students and resident physicians as part of their clinical training. At the university, I primarily teach at the undergraduate level within the medical program, but I also teach at the advanced level for doctoral students in the field of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. I have served as a course director and contributed to the development and teaching of a student-selected course (SVK; 7.5 hp credits) within the medical program.

Since 2022, my main teaching role has been as director of studies for the MDBI course (Medical Diagnostics with Basic Science Integration; 22.5 hp credits) in semester 4 of the medical program at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge. My responsibilities include overall administrative, teaching, and student-related duties, as well as delivering lectures, facilitating Team-Based Learning (TBL) seminars, and designing and conducting student assessments, including sit-in clinical examinations, OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations), and written examinations.

As a research group leader, I supervise several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in their academic training toward doctoral defense and associate professorship.
