I received my D.D.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Karolinska Institutet. In 2004 I was appointed associated professor and senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, and in 2010 professor. Five PhD students have completed their studies under my supervision since 2006.
Dental amalgam and mercury was the research area of my thesis, and thereafter the scope of my research has evolved into different fields. At present, my research activity is mainly focused on register based studies. These are performed in research areas related to dentistry and dental health. We investigate the effects of the reform of the Swedish national dental health insurance scheme in 1999, which included subsidized replacement of dental restorations to relieve symptoms allegedly because of the adverse effect of dental restorative materials. We also investigate different outcomes of potential mercury exposure in a cohort of sons to dental personnel, oral complications in patients with medically acquired hyposalivation, as well as the risk of inflammation-related diseases among patients with periodontitis and their first-degree relatives. Upcoming projects are related to gerodontics and the interaction between oral and general health in elderly
Major research area: Environmental medicine in a dental perspective; Oral epidemiology
