About me

  • I lead the preclinical cardiovascular research activity aimed at uncovering how disturbances in excitation–contraction coupling, Ca²⁺ signaling, and inflammatory pathways contribute to impaired cardiac performance and remodeling.

I have established a unique and comprehensive platform that integrates a broad spectrum of experimental approaches, including in vivo and in vitro disease models, alongside advanced techniques for characterizing cardiovascular phenotypes through both non-invasive (echocardiography) and invasive (LV catheterization, PV-loop) assessments. These experimental approaches are complemented by cellular studies investigating contractility and Ca²⁺ signaling in cardiomyocytes. The research is carried out in close collaboration with national and international partners, promoting a multidisciplinary and translational environment that connects fundamental discoveries to potential clinical applications.

Research

  • My research focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying heart failure (HF) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets and strategies to prevent and treat cardiac dysfunction. Our research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms and pathophysiology underlying heart failure, ischemic heart disease, cardiometabolic syndrome, and inflammatory cardiomyopathies. The overarching goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop interventions that modulate cardiac inotropy, fibrosis, and inflammation, ultimately improving outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Teaching

  • Lead teacher for the Cardiovascular module in the Master’s Programme in Translational Physiology and Pharmacology (MTPP) and for the Cardiovascular Pharmacology component of the Project Work course.

I teach Physiology, Cardiovascular Pharmacology, and Local Anesthetics to medical, biomedical, and undergraduate students, using interactive and problem-based approaches that link theory with experimental practice to enhance critical thinking and engagement.
